Sick of Firefox

TheVoice, div0

We are talking just about a Web Browser.

To most people, there would be no differences between IE and anything else. It just works and therfore no reason to install or use anything else.

I think that was the point I was making.

Anyone who isn't aware of the other browsers will be perfectly happy with IE and even when given a system where they had a choice of browsers, they'd still prefer to use IE because it is what they are comfortable with.

Surely there must be some sort of incompatibility/conflict with your OS or other software.

I have been using Firefox as my main browser almost since release day and it's always been working without any problems.

Unfortunately I have no idea how to help you with your problem.

BTW Chrome is also quite nice, deffo very nice and stable with its short life time.

Does anyone find that once FF has been open for a few hours of heavy use that javascript seems to become sluggish - for instance the iplayer scrolling bar judders instead of being smooth.

Also the "red circle" bug is a bit annoying, but they never seem to have fixed it (http://support.mozilla.com/tiki-view_forum_thread.php?comments_parentId=204039&forumId=1)

Seen the same thing on a few different machines, I've probably just hexed them!

Firstly, can you confirm that you've created an entirely new profile? Fixes most Firefox problems.

I can't say I've had any particular problems with 3.5.2, and 3.5.x in general is a nice improvement on 3.0. It's not as fast as Chrome but it's definitely faster than IE8. Yes, it takes a while to start up if you have a few extensions, but I don't see why you'd start your browser more than once or twice a day anyway.

Why Firefox over Chrome? Two things: add-ons and the smart location bar.

It's definitely a problem with your machine, I'm using 3.5.2 and I have upwards of 10 tabs open and it's perfect.

i currently have about 60+ different web pages open in tabs and no problems here, it must be a problem with ether the pages your veiwing or something like your running low on memory or something.

do you have any add-on's ect running? it could be a problem with them, try turning off all add-on's and switching them back on 1 at a time

Hey Ricochet,

From my experience I find Firefox quite a bit slower on single core cpus. It tends to slow down after you open a lot of tabs and switching quickly between them like you mentioned.

The only thing I would recommend is to resort to an older version, such as 2.xx and report your findings.
This makes no sense as Firefox is a currently a single threaded application.

No it isn't. It doesn't do process-per-tab like Chrome and IE, but there's a lot more than 1 thread (right now I'm at 29).
Things like the SQLite storage all run in separate threads.

Well, this is what I meant. If you open new tabs, you don't get new threads. I've yet to see Firefox top 25% CPU. So my point that it doesn't make much sense still stands...

There's no relevance to whether you get new tabs with new threads. I've yet to see Chrome maxing out all the CPUs in the Task Manager either, so your observation hardly stands...

The threads handle things like network traffic, JavaScript, the bookmarks/history/cookies/passwords storage separately and there are plenty of cases where you can make one work hard. Linking to an awful piece of reporting doesn't help matters either - it's by no means decided whether Firefox ever will do process-per-tab.

Further to my post about websites hanging with 3.5.2 it only seems to be a problem with OcUK. Uninstalled Firefox, deleted all of my preferences and addons and reinstalled and still it hangs within minutes. Never had a problem with any previous version but I'm bored of it now. Back to IE until a new versions released.

Did you try an entirely new profile? (Add --p to your Firefox shortcut and it will ask you for a profile. Choose to create a new one.)

If it's still no good you could always try Chrome... a world better than IE!

No idea. Thought it could've been someone's sig causing a problem with adblock or noscript so I uninstalled both of them without luck. Don't really know what else it could be. Probably something stupid I've not even thought of :o

Some things (like antivirus software) add plugins that'll persist across profiles and can cause fun things to happen.
