Sid Meier's Civilization Beyond Earth - Alpha Centauri sequel announced!

Got around 25 hours in and I really like it. The game does need a lot of work but no different when the very bland Civ 5 first came out in comparison to a very feature rich Civ 4. It's already clear which are the best choices stuff, which is a shame, and it shows poor balance.

~15 hours in now, I didn't have fun and I regret my purchase.

I won on the highest difficulty on my first playthrough. This is the 1st time I've ever done that in a Civ game (played them all since Civ II). I've only won one maybe 2 games of Civ IV on the highest difficulty, in hundreds of hours.

Broken aspects of the game include land improvements that provide health, trade routes which can tripple the production of cities or espionage which allows you to easily steal cities without even declaring war. The aliens cripple the AI factions while they barely hurt me, except for the siege worm, which I just avoid for a while. Other than orbitals, everyting in the game is a reskinned Civ V feature. The factions are soulness, the leaders are all the same, diplomacy seems even worse than Civ V. Playing large maps is a chore, everything needs micromanagement. The UI lacks Civ V basic features. I could go on..

I may give this another go in 2 years but I'm afraid it won't have the stellar sales of Civ V so there won't be as many DLCs or expansions.

What makes you say that? Don't forget how bad Civ 5 was at launch. This in comparison is "polished".

No fix still just a workaround to get the res you want.

They should have rushed a fix out for that straight away :/

Purity, harmony or supremacy? Which do you like and why?

I am undecided yet.

Love the look of the Purity UU's, but the VC is god awful. Harmony has the easiest VC and I like the UB's. Supremacy is basically the Borg :p

I have to agree 99%

There is no way this game needed to come out needing DLC to fix it. It should have come out as good as Brave new world + a bit more.

It basically failed.

kinda agree on this. OFC i'm still going to play it. I've only managed 10 hours so far - I have to complete it at least 10x :P

I said from the start this would not be anything like the old alpha and that there was going to be a lot of disappointment. Its just a money maker, a rip off. Best thing gamers can do is leave it on the shelf for next couple of years and then pick it up in the steam sales and hopefully with all the bugs fixed and the best thing Sid Meier can do is pack his bags and take retirement he lost interest in the Civ games a long time a go.

I like it. I just look at it as DLC and after hous upon hours of Civ V it's nice to see it looking a bit different.

It's hardly a bank breaker at just over £20 for hours of gameplay.

Which bugs would those be, aside from the res issue on 144hz screens? I've not encountered a single bug (aliens aside). EVERYONE said it wouldn't be as good as AC, if that was going to be your benchmark you were always going to be disapointed, just play AC.

Personally I'm still really enjoying this, it probably is going to need an expansion or two before it reaches its full potential but I think its still much better than Civ 5 was at launch. As for comments about it being a re-skin of Civ5, I'm not sure what people expected, I mean it is a Civ game, unless they made changes for changes sake then there are always going to be a lot of similarities.

So far I have had 2 games. 1 I thought I was doing well on and was about 10 turns off winning then it gave me a splash screen saying I had lost but not told me why.

The second game I have upped the difficulty a bit but am still very much a dominant force on the planet and appear to be winning again. This does not mean I am enjoying it but there just doesn't seem to be any sense of urgency to get a specific tech or any joy when you get a tech before another faction. There also appears to be no specific faction units which I found disappointing.

In reality this isn't a brand new game like Civ 5 was at launch though is it...

This should have all of the improvements that have been made to Civ 5/Brave New World so far, plus more to justify the extra £30. If it is just a game that could be DLC then it should be priced at £10-15.

Total biscuit has done a WTF is Beyond Earth - Its hella long but its quite good. He gives a fair first opinion the game.

I wasn't happy with Civ V at launch (like many other hardcore fans) and in fact I've only started investing dozens of hours in the game after the final expansion last year. However, it was a clear step in another direction with many drastic changes, from the graphics and hexgrid to combat and the focus sliders, which gave the game a fresh feel. This explains its rave reviews and good sales.

This time the reviews are just OK and many fans are very dissapointed (not just hardcore ones).

A lot of moaning in this thread already. How many hours have you put in and which difficulty are you paying at?

Until you understand the intricacies all of the systems in the game, how can you make a rational judgment? I for one won't be so quick to discount the game. Ask me again after 40 hours.
