***Sid Meier's Civilization VII***

I gave up hoping for that years ago. I don't think they know how to fix the AI.

Recent Civ games have been unable to make the game harder without essentially getting the AI to cheat. Civ VI Deity mode is awful. I can beat it but doing so isn't any fun as one has to play a particular way - and that way isn't just "better"

This is exactly my problem too and I won't buy another civ game until they address this issue.

I really can't see this being a huge priority. According to Steam only 6.6% of players have beaten the game on Deity. I don't recall seeing any talk of improving the AI either from the studio or from anyone reporting on the game. It just doesn't seem to be one anyones radar.

Ultimately, I doubt they would sell enough extra copies to justify the development cost of fixing the AI

The AI has been useless since IV's army stacks were dropped in V, its just much harder to program it behave realistically. One thing I have read about Civ VII that gives me some hope this may change is the way you can stack units to a general and move them across the map as one. It should be easier to program the AI to stack an appropriate mix of units together and then arrange them correctly on the map (ranged behind infantry etc.) when battle is joined.

I think I've bought all of them since 3 on release day- but not this one.

A few reasons
Price (and feature locking of core mechanics in DLC)
The art style annoys me for some reason
Not sure about the new mechanics (civ changing at era end), so want to see how they're received by players

Finally, I got badly burned with Starfield, and am now going to be more cautious with release day buys.

I found Humankind underwhelming you didn't really seem to do a lot. Looking forward to Civ 7 not made my order yet, waiting for pay day:-p
I gave it a go yesterday after reading some of the comments on here. Played about 60 turns I think and got to the 3rd age, no idea what I did to progress and was pretty much just moving people around and clicking next. Did not make me want to do just one more turn.

Can anyone remember the situation with Civ VI at launch.

It feels like Civ VII is "nickel and diming" people a lot more. There is an awful lot of content being paywalled behind various editions. I seem to remember there was a bonus civ for pre orders that everyone got later but I can't remember. Things just feel far more egregious with this version of Civ. I know I might just be wrong though

It’s basically the same as 6, 5 and 4. I don’t recall 3, 2, and 1 - I didn’t play them.

All of those games had new mechanics and civilisations locked behind paywalls in for form of DLC or expansion packs.

The weird thing here is I have some real concerns about this game. I know I am still going to buy it though.

Do I pre order though is a different question. I've got it in my basket and I've nearly checked out with the founders edition multiple times over the last week.
If you've got it sat in your basket it feels like it'll be an itch you'll scratch sooner rather than later , in which case just pre-order it as much as I hate saying so. Otherwise I'd suggest waiting for them to fix things, a sale, or if you've got the patience, the expansions.

Cant say that I mind all that much, I'm used to paying for extra civs in DLCs in games and lets face it Civ has a long way to go before we're talking the DLC reaping of a Paradox title or the Total Warhammer games.

Even the base game of Civ 7 will give me several hundred hours of multiplayer civ enjoyment and 70 quid or so for 700 hours is pretty good value in my book :)

It doesn't feel different to VI to me. I'm not a great fan of the profusion of mini-DLCs in general, I don't mind paying for a big expansion but a Civ or leader or whatever doesn't feel great value. But, on the other hand, the amount of work that goes into these games has gone up a lot more than the price has so they need to make that money somewhere and another way of looking at it is that you're basically given the choice of paying as much or as little as you want. Buy just the base game, or spend more to get all these minor bits and pieces, it's up to you.

Bought the basic Civ6 edition late on and found it to be quite lack lustre and pretty much broken in some aspects of game play.

Only once paying for the extra DLC did it come to life so I’m a bit wary of a similar situation again with 7.

Civ 6 was better at launch - felt more complete, to me at least. Didn't have anywhere near as much of this locking content behind a paywall.

Yeah, that's a concern.

I've been annoyed with both V and VI, which put key features as DLC (religion for V?)

Civ VI today is barely recognisable from the Civ VI that launched. Two major expansions and dozens of leaders/changes added to the game over the years including with the Frontier pass.

I know Civ VI has changed a lot. That wasn't really what I was driving at.

The issue I have is that on Day 1, there seems to be a lot of extra content that is paywalled for Civ VII. I don't recall this being the case with Civ VI.

Founders Edition includes:
  • Full base game
  • Early Access - play the game up to 5 days early on February 6, 2025
  • Tecumseh and Shawnee Pack
  • Crossroads of the World Collection, with post-launch content featuring 2 new leaders, 4 new civilizations, 4 new Natural Wonders, a special cosmetic bonus, and more
  • Right to Rule Collection, with post-launch content featuring 2 new leaders, 4 new civilizations, 4 new Wonders, a special cosmetic bonus, and more!*
  • Deluxe Content Pack, which includes:
    • 2 leader personas
    • 4 profile customizations
    • 1 alternate scout skin
  • Founders Content Pack, which includes:
    • 2 leader personas
    • 4 profile customizations
    • 1 fog of war tile set
    • 1 Founders palace skin

The stuff in bold is Day 1 stuff

The Tech and Shaw pack is included in all pre-order. The rest is cosmetics, isn't it?

Edit Nope. The Personas are mechanically different.

You’d be naive to think the content roadmap isn’t pretty but settled for a game like this long in advance of launch. It’s better it’s published in advance rather than it being held back.

The deluxe and founders content packs appear to be cosmetic only. Not sure there is any ‘real’ value to that.

The rest looks identical to what was known at the CIV6 launch. I’m pretty sure there was day 1 DLC for some leaders which were locked to one of the editions/paywall.

Babylon wasn’t it?

Edit: nope Babylon was CIV5 day 1 DLC but that adds to the point that the launch and DLC plan appears similar to previous games.
