Sigma 24mm f/1.4 Art announced

Well thats annoying...my current 24mm f/1.8 is at sigma getting some parts replaced / serviced as i type this :p:p Could be tempted by the 1.4 if its as good as the nikon and around the £500 mark.

The Sigma autofocus in a supertele would be a nightmare. The Sigma 24 will be interesting to see it compared to the rumoured Otus wide angle. It's a step in the right direction for Sigma, hope to see an 85 and 135 Art soon.

Like i said, i currently have the 24 1.8 and it produces very very sharp images with lovely bokeh and has an absolutely absurdly close focus distance...but the AF performance is very poor (think af 50mm). An HSM version with the IQ of the current 24mm (albeit its quite soft around the edges below f/4) would be a great lens :)

Excellent! Was hoping for this or a 1.8 Nikon to be release before our next wedding in April. Didn't fancy forking out £1100 on the Nikon 24mm f1.4

I wonder when they will finally get round to replacing their dodgy 24-70mm f2.8 with an art lens it is a bit of an embarrassment given there recent output!

Releasing the 24-70mm first would have killed sales of their 24mm, 35mm & 50mm Art lenses.

The beauty of the first 35mm art was brilliant, yet cheap enough for people making the switch to primes (or wanted to try them out), getting hooked and then purchasing every prime Sigma create from then on.

Official pricing released, $850 which is $50 less than the 35mm Art which is interesting, 24mm f/1.4 is a harder lens to design well than the 35mm and thus nor smelly entails a higher price. My pessimistic side says this lens is perhaps not to the same standard as their 35mm and the Nikon and Canon are still optically superior. I hope I'm wrong and sigma is just being extra aggressive. They do have an older 24mm f/1.8 at a much lower price so perhaps they didn't want to raise prices too far.

I think the difference, if anyway will be small to minuscule as both the Canon and Nikon had a recent redesign and release, as opposed to the 35mm or 50mm where those were designed as long as back in the 90's.

It does look nice :) I'm considering replacing my Sigma 17-50 f/2.8 for either the 24mm, 18-35mm or the 35mm, but the 18-35mm f/1.8 is far too tempting at £570!

but what will the cost difference be, that's the key! If it is good as the OEM lenses and 60-70% of the price then Sigma have scored.

My 24 1.8 came back today from repair, and have been reminded how much i love this focal length at 1.8 :D

Luckily or unluckily I already have the Canon 24/1.4 so I can't see myself changing, like I didn't swap the 35L for the 35A.

But if I didn't have it however, I would definitely go for the Sigma, like I have with the 50A. :)

This is with the Canon 24/1.4 @1.4

I'll be first in line for this lens - it looks awesome and the price is amazing. Looking around it's $849 which converts to £550 + VAT, so about £660

First look

While I'm sure some would disagree I'm with you on that stance even if he Sigma is ever so slightly better the marginal gain isn't worth the cost and hassle of buying and selling. Interesting to see just how good it is Sigma have set the bar pretty high for themselves with these art primes so it would be easy to create a great lens and still disappoint!

Great news, Sigma are slowly destroying Nikon and Canon's lens lineup with their much cheaper and slightly better primes, and I assume this uses their special computer link thingy too? The more lenses they release and the more market share they take from the big two players the better, it should encourage them to innovate and get their act together. Looking forward to another great lens from Sigma. :)

They are making great lenses but I wouldn't say "destroy".

The 24mm isn't out yet and really at the moment they have like a handful that are worth looking at, at most.

I mean the 50mm (which I have), is a 1.4, not 1.2, so you trade sharpness for bokeh.
The 35mm is 17 years late, took them a long time to "destroy".

They need another 50 more before one can say "destroy", something like a decent 24-70 and a 70-200 would be good for a start which is what most people buy after their kit lens. There are very few people jump straight into primes.

You also need to remember that for some pros, the extra few hundred pounds isn't really a concern, it is tax deductable anyway, better put it into gear than give it to the tax man.
