Sigma 50/1.4 Art

Highly doubt I'll bother tbh. Its a nice lens but a very marmite focal length.

I am not sure marmite is the right word, that can apply to every lens. Not every lens is loved by everyone. But I know what you are saying, I spent the last 2 weeks in Hong Kong with just the 50mm, although i have shot some nice images, I have found the 50mm quite a challenging lens to work with. May be because I am used to the 35mm so especially at the beginning I wanted to step back a lot. It got better towards the end for sure, so I agree to a point that 50mm may not be for everyone.

There are however times I prefer the 50mm over 35, like table decor shots.

The lens needs MA, +9 on one 5D, +14 on the other.

Will do it to the lens itself when I get the dock tomorrow.

First impression are that it has low CA, nice bokeh, build quality is very good.

The hood however is not as nice.

I had the same issue going the other way. I was used to shooting the 50mm so much that it took a while to get used to the 35mm. I still haven't really!

It's one of the reasons of the single lens trips, so I get to know the lens, learn about the lens, the focal length. It's good to work with all of them, if say one of them break at a job then you need to work with another focal length, you need to be at your best that you can at that too.

Not sure i could justify nearly £900 on this over the Nikon 50mm f/1.8 i have. I'm sure the Sigma is great but i'd rather spend the money on an 85 or 24-35mm prime

£780, after tax and duty.

And I do understand, hence i've got L for everything else except the 50mm. Still don't have 50L, perhaps I'll put an red elastic band on it :D

It's a new optical design. The 50L although is a 2006 lens, its design is based on their older 50/1.0 lens and that is based on something from the 80's. The Canon 50/1.4 and Sigma's old 50/1.4 have a similar design. This new design, similar to the Otus produces better images.

Just ouy of interest,is there a particular chart or routine you use to test whether a lens needs MA? Want to try it out on a few lenses on my D610.

Shoot a ruler, or something with text at 45degree to the lens. Then adjust to suit.

Tripod, remote release to eliminate camera shake as this is normally done indoors so the light are low.

Nice lens.

Raymond, since you've now got the Sigma and the Canon 50mm f/1.4, lets see some side by side real world comparison shots. use the camera secured on a tripod.

Something like text in a book set a reasonable distance from the lens, some bright lights outdoors etc., lets see what the new lens can do compared to the Canon.

I would but that's not exactly real world comparison :p There are plenty of websites that does that.

http://www.the-digital-picture.com/...ages.aspx?Lens=941&LensComp=115&LensComp2=403

Real world for me would be using it in a shoot, moving, tracking, lights into lens, flares, dark rooms etc.

I do know that after using the Canon for 2 weeks in Hong Kong, I feel that lens' sweet spot is at 2.0, I realised that after about a day, it is VERY sharp at 2.0.
