Looking to get either the 17-70 or 18-50 f2.8 as a replacement for my kit lens on the 400D

Anyone had any quality issues with these as I have seen various remarks in reviews etc?

Can anyone recommend one over the other? or recommend a similar alternative upto £250

Theres a new version of the 18-50 2.8 , it has a bigger filter size, 72 instead of 67, the new version is meant to be a bit better than the old version, which was very good, i had one, and my sister has the new one on her 400d.

A good lens indeed

Hi Rich

I am swaying to this, probably for the longer reach than anything. The extra 1 or 2 stops the 18-50 gives I probably would never use!

Have you had any front/back focus problems or the quality issues that seem to haunt Sigma?

Hi Andy

Nope, no focus issues with the lens just me!:D

I went withthis lens for the longer reach but sometimes I think I'd rather have the constant aperture of the 2.8

i have the 17-70 admittedly not for long but so far its very good the focus is pretty quick and accurate, build quality is ok and gives nice images sharp when using f5.6 or higher. i have read reviews which people say their copy suffers from zoom creep but mine is really tight. i got it at auction from a uk seller but it was shipped from Dubai ????. i am very happy with it.

I also have the 17-70 and another vote for it. Use it for about 75% of what I shhot and it's fitting my needs very well as a walk-about lens. Little bit of zoom creep on rare occasions but never caused me any problems. Decent focus speed and the macro is a useful extra.

Sharp from f/5.6? Mine's not too shoddy even at f/2.8!

Thanks all, will be going for the 17-70, hopefully ordering tomorrow! :D Hoping to find somewhere who doesn't use City Link!

Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 ex dg is suppose to be excellent and its dirt cheap.

grrrr :p

*edit, yes it does look quite nice from the reviews I have quickly looked up, but I am still going for the 17-70. The 24-70 doesn't have the width, is a big and heavy lens and 82mm for filters

My old workmate has the Sigma 17-70 and uses it for weddings when we do them, he is very happy with it and I'm sure yours will be fine too if you choose it!

....but Alexisonline has stirred the cooking pot with the suggestion of the 24-70  :p

I keep saying no, but I am tempted! £199 + 30 delivery from HK is not too bad either!

The 17-70 I can get for £210 Inc Delivery.

Will I miss the wide if I get the 24-70? I can always save for a 10-20 later I guess!

gaah, I wanted to order today as well!

I'd personally miss the 17-24 range, but it's all personal and depends on what you shoot. Also, a decent 10-20 lens doesn't come particularly cheap!

You could get a 10-20 HSM and 24-70 f/2.8 for £483 :D

Helium - I got a 77mm lens cap replacement from the bay for my 10-20. Its a replica of the nikon pinch end caps and works a treat. £1.95 as well!

**slaps alexis** Stop it! (That really sounds camp! :D )

Why can't cameras come with a decent lens to start with...so much easier! heh

I have the 17-70. Very, very versatile lens if not the ultimate in IQ. The main foible I have with it is severe purple fringing in certain situations.

I'm considering dumping it for a 17-40L at the mo...
