Signing On

I know he has £3.5k tax-free. Unless he's living in a mansion that's a good few months of decent living.

Maybe I'm different - I'd be down to my last penny before I even considered signing on.
I kind of have to agree with this point (although not the way you spoke about him in your earlier one) I am several hundred pounds overdrawn, have a loan of over 5k to maintain, a credit card debt, and only have 250 quid in savings. Todays visit to the job centre is because I cannot find work, (yes I am looking and have applied for several jobs) and simply dont know what else to do.

Thats the point...if not declared and they find out then they will not be happy..if you have it in a bank then move it,they may ask for bank statements which they are entitled to do.

If the OP is going to claim housing benefit as well, then the council will ask to see bank statements covering the last two months, so moving it out would not work. Basically it is always better to just be honest.

It does come accross as a tad cheeky banking 3.5k of pay you never paid tax on and then claiming dole that is money from tax that people have actually paid.

But then if the job was the only thing you could get at the time then fair play, just don't go telling the public about it as it might come back and bite you in the ass ;)

That money's been spent. I'm down to my last few quid. But I wasn't sure how far back they would check.

I think I'm going to continue looking for work for a little longer before resorting to claiming benefits.

Cheers for all the advice.

nope they wont check your finances from the past . 100%

and why hold off on claiming ? thats what JSA is there for ? to try and stop you getting into debt while in between jobs

edit- also knip, unless youve already left i really would not bother going in to the job centre. all they will do is send you to use the phone in the corner. best off just ringing from home

Well that makes no sense, JSA is there for those who are looking for work. Look for work whilst your claiming, at the end of the day who cares what some keyboard warrior on OCUK says about JSA.

It takes a small amount of time to sign on and you're getting £50 a week.

Nope, just because he's signing on doesn't mean he's not trying to get work/improve his position. Put that enormous taring brush away, you hardly know any detail of his personal circumstances so can't give any sort of fair opinion on him.

He's already defrauded the tax office though, why stop there!

Sad thing is he'd not have paid any tax had he declared it properly anyway as its under his personal allowance.

I'm about to sign on for the first time but I'm a bit worried about the attention it could bring. Recently I've had a few cash in hands jobs. I wasn't claiming benefits at the time and I didn't declare this income so I paid no tax on it. Over the past couple of months I paid that money into my bank account, about £3500. If I start collecting the dole is it likely that someone will start to take a closer look at my financial history and ask me to pay tax on that money?
You wouldn't'v'e paid any tax anyway.

FAIL.

You do not deserve JSA imho - why should a government that you defrauded pay you?

No one's perfect, the fact that he's used it all up before seeking JSA makes up for that in my books. Presumably he could have signed on ages ago and didn't.

Say he had 3.5k he should have paid tax on but didn't and claimed JSA while he still had that money, I'd think that wasn't on.

I missed this bit,

That money's been spent. I'm down to my last few quid. But I wasn't sure how far back they would check.

So apologies OP :(. Claim away.

He didn't defraud the government, he defrauded you. And me. And every other taxpayer. That is where the government gets its money from, its money is our money. I don't like being ripped off, do you?
But, he also didn't claim JSA while he used the money up (that he wouldn't've paid tax on), so I'm split.

I'll forgive him, it is after all not as serious as drink driving or other crimes which may physically harm others.

What is more concering is the massive corporations who get around tax, not the small undeclared sums many people deal it. It's not right but it's hardly something for you of all people to get on your moral high horse about.

Oh and if by your name you were born in 1968 I'd guess you've probably paid enough tax to not feel guilty about claiming JSA, get on it.
