Silent Hill 2 PC

Locking fps for most games is an exercise to just lower GPU noise and thus power draw and heat

In UE5 it's also an exercise at applying consistent frame times as UE5 bounces between tens of fps randomly, not necessarily to control stutters as they will still show up if they happen, but it levels the frametimes.

I’ll have a more scientific look at my settings later and observe when these things are happening in game. Can’t be that bad if I played it for so long yesterday

Maybe more sensitive to something that comes across as a stutter? For example I’ve never suffered coil wine across 30 years of gpu purchases but others are highly sensitive to it.

I can hear my 4090's coil whine but only when I use screen magnifier in Windows and move around the desktop/apps - Only under that scenario is coil whine audible even though it's so faint but my PC is as quiet in desktop use as it is when turned off so that is the only reason why I can hear it then :p

No this is very noticeable, I’m wondering if it’s down to the unlocked framerate I had and thus noticing the drops more.
I don’t know if dropping 117 to 95 means I’d experience the same drop if I was locked at 60 (as in the %). Logically I’d assume not as I’m not dropping to 60 in the first instance.

Oh re coilwhine. Only way I can hear it and thus use it as a test is to run the RDR2 benchmark for some reason.

I also think the ingame fps limiter is busted in some way in that it does not apply decent frame pacing when capped, hence why RTSS is probably the best solution as it introduces no latency, and doesn't have the flaws of broken ingame limiters.

What’s the argument for not setting globally in NVCP? Bear in mind I’m currently using the GSYNC + VSYNC on globally and limit set, then disabling VSYNC in games.

You may want to on fly turn a frame cap on/off or adjust it, setting a NVCP/app global cap means you need to close the game down, go into CP/app and adjust it each time then reload the game. RTSS can be done in realtime and has keyboard shortcuts as well.

Good shout. I think my VR moans about it existing but I think I have it installed still as it goes with MSI afterburner from memory. And I rarely use VR so doesn’t matter.

Right so it’s running at 4k, DLSS balanced, everything in high, TXAA. No FG

I noticed sharpen was set on high so I’ve just disabled that and limiting to 60 via RTSS.

For some reason got 72ms latency. Removing cap from RTSS drops it to 50 odd but adding any cap (game, nvcp, RTSS) and back to 70+.

Put back as it was and it’s around 40 on DLSS quality. No idea but not really noticing as many stutters. Also those mannequin leg things can **** off, i’ve just come across two that seem a lot stronger than the others I’ve encountered and I’ve rinsed through my first aid stuff

Yeah I can tell the hospital is going to suck even if I wasn’t pre warned. The fact I’m getting so much ammo, and clearly going to get a shotgun says a lot. Plus abandoned hospital levels are always creepy.
ATM I’m trying to get the things I need for key in directors office.

Edit. Very next room I entered I got the shotty. It’s a shame I don’t get the flashback references as I never played the original games.

Played fine for me on my RTX 4090, man :p

I am going to reinstall this and replay since DLSS 4.5 RR is said to be really good in this now so wanna check that out.
Just a shame it has the Lumen issues with 4.5 but deffo makes game look better besides that

I was delighted that after slogging through the hospital I’m then treated to the Hospital but the alternative version :| Jumped many times but I don't feel the game relies on jump scares as much as RE does, which I prefer. Learned early on I can't rely on the radio, that's how I got my first "**** off" out loud when one of those mannequin things popped out of what I thought was a clear room.

Jesus Christ the fannying around I've had to do to get this running near 40k60 on a 3090... this card is showing it's age mind.

In the end, I've ended up using a mixture of DLSS and FSR3 FG via OptiScaler, loads of trial and error. Got tearing at like 70-90 fps on a 120Hz screen (must be an issue with VRR when using FG) - forced vsync on in NV app and that stopped. Now I just have some slight stuttery/ghosty icons when I pan the camera - not sure I can be assed to find a fix for that or just go back to yo-yo 40-60 fps again and turn off the FG....

Oh, and yea, I just finished the slog through the hospital too. FML....

Should VRR even be enabled on 4k tvs if using a pc to run games? Would it not be better just treating the tv as a gysnc/freesync monitor with vsync enabled within the app and control panel but turned off in-game? Thinking of upgrading my budget Toshiba 60hz tv to an oled within a month or two and keep hearing issues with VRR enabled.

40fps lock would be fine for me in this game, not ideal but it's pritty slow paced.

I assume having GS/FS enabled would overrule VRR which I think is a generic standard? On my tv the option actually says "Enable VRR & GSYNC" so its combined, I thought GS/FS were both types of VRR.

I run it as you said, GSYNC and VSYNC on globally, V off in games. There are issues with VRR flicker (to clarify, this happens with GS/FS) but oddly, SH2 was the first game I've ever noticed it in but it was in very specific circumstances. I find screen-tearing etc far more egregious so happy sticking with it. The good thing is that if you get a new tv with a 120hz+ refresh rate, you can still benefit from that even if you decide to leave VRR off.

Thanks, that makes more sense.
