machine is a delonghi icona.

need to get some proper shot glasses, i just used a cup so could have done to much or not enough.

steaming the milk also didnt go that well :p

had to empty half the jug twice as it foamed like crazy!

the coffee used was costa pre-ground from asda just to try it out.

going to be buying a porlex grinder and some beans once paid, but for now this is much better than instant :) and it gives me time to practise getting it right.

the only problem i have right now is not being able to twist the filter holder enough, it is leaking a little bit. the machine comes with a scoop that gives enough to fill the filter so maybe i didnt tamper it down enough but i can only push it onto the one on the machine so cant really compact it that well.

i know a lot is preference but that looks very pale utajoker, im not one too speak though as im only just cutting back on the milk quantity now im getting better beans (nice coffee shop style head though).

on the bean note, ive now had a couple of all the espresso starter pack plus some oporapa from Hasbean and had some very interesting results (please note i only drink Latte's with a double shot and 8-10oz steamed milk)

Favorite so far is a tie between Oporapa and JailBreak, both cut through the milk making a very nice and sweet drink.
Jaberwocky is close behind the first 2 but isnt as sweet

Brazil Fazenda Cachoeria Bourbon seemed a bit sour but is still in process of a final decision as i havent managed to get the perfect shot yet as one was too fast but sweeter then the other that was about 40 seconds (ill leave it behind jaberwocky for now as the cupping notes sound like a perfect espresso for me i just havent obtained it yet)

Kicker - got a perfect 22sec shot with lots of crema and i could taste the fruitiness the coffee is described but it just didnt work for me, i might try it as a filter coffee or dilute espresso + milk but i just dont think its a coffee for me.

Still to try blake and im holding out hope the fruitiness is sweeter then Kicker.

current plan will be to order non of the above again yet as there is still too many others available to try but i will be asking for suggestions like the Oporapa and Jailbreak (also going to try give the Brazil Fazenda Cachoeria Bourbon some more love)

My Gaggia Classic packed up at the weekend so I decided to take it apart to diagnose the problem. I fixed it and I wish I'd taken some pictures now, because it was a simple debris blockage and was something that other people with Classics are likely to experience, simply because of the design. I'll describe it as best as I can for reference.

Symptoms:

Switch on the pump to pass some water through it. The pump makes all the normal noises but very little or no water comes out the portafilter. Take off the portafilter and there is still little to no water pumped through.

Diagnosis:

In the water container, there are two flexible pipes. As you face the machine, the one on the left draws water up and the one on the right is a pressure relief for the pump. Pull the right-hand tube out; if there's a blockage, the the pump will simply pump the water back down this tube.

Cure:

Unplug the machine. Take out the drip tray, the chrome overflow tube and the water container and lay the machine on its back. You'll see a Philips screw in the middle of where the hot water comes out into the portafilter. Undo it and pop the perforated disc off. Underneath is a round plate secured by two allen bolts. Take them out and wriggle the plate free. Both of these parts need cleaning thoroughly as they get clogged up with backed-up coffee residue and it's unlikely any cleaning or de-scaling products will clean them effectively.

Now look to the left of the two bolt holes in the machine. It won't be obvious if it's blocked, but there's a 2mm hole where the water is pumped through. You will need to clear this hole of scale to make the machine work again. I used a paper clip and loosened the scale, then stood the machine up and pumped some water through it. Quite a lot of crud pumped through into the drip tray.

Once you've done this, re-assemble the machine and it should work properly again.

How do you all store beans? Room temperature, fridge or freezer?

Avoid the fridge and freezer (see Flibster's link above). I store beans in the bag that they come in and in a cupboard at room temperature. I use a clip to keep it airtight. Ideally don't buy beans that will be hanging around for more than about 3 weeks.

Can anyone recommend a good whole bean for espresso and lattes? In terms of taste I suppose I like coffee that is more chocolate than fruity without tasting too roasted.

I have a gaggia classic and a porlex hand grinder. Work in London so can visit coffee shops to buy beans.

I have been buying marks and Spencer espresso beans as they are cheap and are surprisingly nice for a pre and post work coffee. Unfortunately they only seem to have ground, hope it hasn't been discontinued.

Any recommendations?

That is a lovely coffee, one of my favourites so work on it!

South and Central America produce some lovely coffee with hints of chocolate in. Monmouth Coffee in Borough market have a good selection of roasted coffee if you can get there. If you can order online, something like the Brazil Fazenda Cachoeria Bourbon above, or the Bolivia Finca David are ones I'd personally recommend.

Jonny, had you been doing a regular backflush and descale before finding the blockages?
Well I don't know what a regular backflush is, so that'll be a no :p

But no, I hadn't descaled it and I knew it was overdue.

I like the straight Monmouth espresso blend but they do loads of good coffees. There's one at London Bridge and Covent Garden, but probably more around now.

You'd probably like the Peru roast from Astrora in Teddington, if you ever pass that way.

I wrote three paragraphs then I decided that this article explains it a lot better than I can!!

http://www.wholelattelove.com/articles/backflushing_an_espresso_machine.cfm

"Backflushing is the process used to clean out the shower screen, brew group and three-way valve."

You can backflush with a cleaning agent and also without. I backflush without cleaner after each day's use and with cleaner every weekend. Without cleaner, it takes less than a minute and with cleaner it takes longer as you have to flush the cleaner out, pull a shot and discard it before using the machine as normal again.

You'll need either a blind basket (basket with no holes) or a blanking plate which covers the holes in your existing filter.

Here's a video which is a lot longer than it needs to be but demonstrates the backflush with cleaner:

Remember to pull a shot after and discard if you backflush with cleaner.

ive been off work today so had time to play with it after i gave the machine a good backflush and clean and now ive got it right its an extreemly nice coffee, i would actually put it on the top of my list now :D

ive also now tried Blake and its a nice coffee but i find the fruitiness quite a strange taste with the milk, nice but not somthing i will be rushing back too.

i must admit though with just 6 different coffees (albeit some being blends) its really amazed me how much difference you can get, it may not be the cheapest way to drink coffee but i drink coffee a lot more then i do any sort of alcohol so i would rather spend my money on coffee, also the ability to have one during the day, before work and when im on call is a big plus over beer!.

Been drinking Hasbean's Rwanda Buf Remera Red Bourbon Washed (deep breath). It's certainly a mouthful and I'm not just talking about its name (tiddy-boom!). It's quite a dark roast, the aroma isn't very intense, but it has a very full malt chocolate flavour with some fruity acridity on the back end. Very good!

Hey all.

Bought myself a proper milk jug for frothing with the espresso machine. Hope it helps my frothing attempts tomorrow. If it doesnt i was thinking of trying to get my hands on one of these.

http://www.philips.co.uk/c/Coffee-a...ution-nina-6-mm-dia-steam-tube-hd5070_01/prd/

Tho they are quite pricey so i thought i would ask the folks in here if they had a 6mm panerello wand spare that they might wana sell cheap that is like the one in the link above. Metal one prefered but take plastic.

Bit early i reckon but thought id get the ball rolling to see if anyone had one spare as some people upgrade there steam wands so might have the old pan wand around still thats not being used. If so let me know in trust.

Did try lookin for places to buy like ebay and the likes but man there expensive like tenner or more for a tiny bit of plastic that probs only costs 10p to make lol. Hence i hope somones got one cheap for me. :)

But gona try the jug for a few days see how i get on. I got one of these.
