Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

I hate to say this but i tried the costa Old Paradise Street Limited Roasts the other day and was very impressed, much richer deeper flavor and not at all burnt or over-extracted as they tend to be (although in costas usual way it was served at around boiling point so nearly impossible to drink for about 10min...)

Need to find Nobel Espresso - spend far too long hanging around kings cross and all i seem to do is buy ale from M&S or so/so coffee from Kabin (Monmouth espresso beans which imho is not their strong suit by a long way)

Fitted a PID on the Classic yesterday.
What do you guys think of this brew machine on Kickstarter?
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1003294547/bruvelo-smart-wifi-connected-pour-over-coffee-brew

Looks nice but not as elegant looking as this:

good work, looks very neat :)

Whats the grinder you've got there?

The kickstarter coffee machines keep looking better and better - I wonder if flibster ever got his through... As tempting as they are i'd rather wait and see how they turn out now!

In other news got my pact v60 though (late as i've not been at home). Great package for £7, and the coffee doesn't seem too bad:

Did you order the keep cup as an extra item as I didn't get one of those in my welcome pack?

Are they actually any good as a travel mug?

nope, just turned up, guess i got lucky!

I've actually already got a larger one and they are pretty goo but don't insulate in the slightest - they aren't really a travel mug as such, rather just a paper cup replacement.

Can anyone spec me a 2oz shot glass? (not from Hasbean)

The last Hasbean one I had has just chipped on its lip after 30 months :( & I want one that's a little shorter as I had trouble fitting it under the portafilter on my Gaggia Cubika plus.

I got one of these a few years ago and its been amazing: http://coffeehit.co.uk/cafe-supplies/espresso-shot-vessels/rattleware-3oz-shot-pitcher
very solidly made and fits nicely under the spout. Unfortunately its out of stock at the moment and seems to be a little awkward to find online i'm afraid :(

Can anyone recommended any good value for money coffee e-shops?

I love the Hasbean stuff, but when it's nearly £5 for shipping it makes ordering one packet an expensive ordeal.

Or does anyone use a subscription service? That may be a cheaper option? I can often go through 250g in a week, easily.

in comparison square mile is actually slightly cheaper gram for gram - or pact are very cheap (search for introductory vouchers as well) as a subscription but the first bag i had from them was pretty useless, second has been much better!

A lot of people love their Italian Job, Signature Blend or Fudge however my palette couldn't pick out those flavours. I did like their Uganda Mount Chesiyo, it was so delicious that I left a review on their site lol

I guess I like a hint of fruit in my lattes whilst some people don't.

I want to get into pour overs as I "think" I will prefer it to milk based coffee. Something like the Clever v2, Hario Kettle (which I have no idea why it's so expensive) and some Filtropa white filters should do the trick.

The brass plates were £13.45 delivered but the group buy has been filled now. I'm running one for Gaggia IMS competition screens atm which are £11.05.

I'll check that one out :)

Pour over wise you don't need a kettle for a clever dripper as it holds the water in to allow for submersion brewing... its not quite pour over exactly but gives much the same result without the faff. If you want to try proper pour over grab a v60, they can come in seriously cheap (until you add a kettle...)

I don't need a screen... but its very tempting, trust me the details if you don't mind?

I have signed up to Pact. El Retiro Coffee is nice enough (Hazlenuts). I'm lloking forward to trying something a bit sweeter next. Anyone else getting coffees from Pacts?

I got a bag of Finca La Montaña from Pact recently and its been really nice, unfortunately its also now discontinued, the first bag i had from them was a bit meh but this ones been much better....

thanks for the heads up majnu - got a couple of bags ordered :)

Has anyone come across a really foolproof guide for the Clever Dripper? Or, any suggestions from any regular users. Thanks :)

I am enjoying this bag of coffee from PACT, but it's no Jailbreak.

I'll try and write one later when do a drink... but seriously, its not hard :)

Rave wise I ordered on the 2nd and got the coffee through on Sat with the free shipping.

I wouldnt know where to start or how much i need, what about Aldi stuff, must be better than instant coffee still. Once i know how much i get through in a month then i can start ordering in bulk.

Rave are still doing free shipping (Discount code "RAVEXMAS") so you've nothing to loose trying their coffee :)

Here we got then...

you need stuff:

Dripper, coffee, filter and grinder (+hot water)

Fold the edges of the paper in and wash with hot water in the dripper (washes some of the paper taste out and warms the dripper up):

while the waters sat in the dripper i grind the coffee - Im only using about 15g for this which isn't much - but I have it pretty finely ground (espresso grind is on the right, grind for the dripper on the left):

on refection (see below) i've ground coarser and doubled the beans to ~30g coffee

Empty the water from the dripper (I tend to do this into the mug so that the mug warms as well), put the dripper on the coaster, add the coffee and fill up with water:

let the coffee bloom and give it a good old stir (btw, be careful here, you don't get anything over the top of the filter paper or you get grinds in your mug)

4 min later empty the water from the mug and pop the dripper on top:

Enjoy with a ginger nut :)

Now as I said i've got a bit of a weird proportion of coffee to water here as i'm grinding very fine, a hangover from only having one grinder.

You can do a ratio of 60g/litre of water (the dripper takes upto 0.5L total) and grind much coarser and it seams to come out better :)

Your variables are time, water, weight of coffee and grind. Try and keep the time and water static at 4min and ~400ml (500ml brims it) then play with the weight and grind :)

^^Don't you use scales, let the coffee bloom and give it a stir ?

nope on the scales, I've weighted it out numerous times in the past but do it by eye & level in the grinder/dripper now :)

Bloom and stir wise I didn't find it made much difference personally but your milage may vary... yes technically giving it a stir post bloom helps the infusion somewhat.

In the interest of experimentation i've just made my second vat of filter today with a double load (ooh - err misses) ground a load coarser, same amount of water and time but closer to 30g:500ml water and its probably better, sweeter richer flavor i'd say :D (also did the bloom & stir just to totally throw the results off)

re-editing the above post :)
