Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

I bought a bag of Union coffee...couple of things

1 - I have 2 divets in the edges....
2 - Using the naker portafilter no longer spits out espresso during a pour.
3 - Coffee now pouring pretty on spec for time per shot vs how it look and taste.

You win some, you lose some!

still looking at grinders...

what electric grinders do people here use?

got it in my head that I need a ceramic conical burr grinder like what my Hario Skerton has but can’t find this in electric grinders, at least in the cheaper ones

closest I can find is stainless steel conical burr for £60 ... Sboly Conical Burr Coffee Grinder, Electric Coffee Grinder Adjustable with 19 Precise Grind Settings, Burr Mill Grinder for Drip, Percolator, French Press, American and Turkish Coffee Makers https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07Z8P348W/ref=cm_sw_r_cp_api_i_TCuMFb2EJMK5K?_encoding=UTF8&psc=1

does it even matter?

You don't tend to get ceramic burs outside manual grinders, think its to do with the grind speed so don't worry about that.

In all honesty you won't get anything approaching your hand grinder's quality for less than £100 - if your not doing espresso i'd go for a Wilfa Svart (about £105 from the looks of it).

Have a watch of this, in summary - skip the £50 step, save your money and buy something better that'll be good to use and will improve your coffee. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AVYGxext8XI

After keeping an eye out for a decent 2nd hand Gaggia for a while, I've taken the plunge and ordered a Gaggia Classic, any tips on upgrades straight off the bat - upgrade the basket first? Also recommendation on a tamper?

Coming from Aeropress / V60, so looking forward to experimenting with proper espresso. My grinder is a baratza encore.

Whilst it depends on what you are wanting to achieve with the grinder (espresso, pourover etc) the 2 machines that I have seen recommended as decent entry level are the baraza encore and the wilfa svart. Both around the same budget.

Upgrade the seal from the stock to silicon.
Basket to VST (probably 18-20g if you like the stock size).
Get a glass shot glass so you can see it from the side
Naked Portafilter so you can learn how it comes out and improve
Jewelry scales with timer to measure your shot
Oh, and a 58.4mm "Competition" Tamper.

Throw that plastic one in the bin.

Awesome thanks, and yeah I have a set of 0.1g accurate scales with timer.

new or used gaggia? if its used and your handy its worth stripping down for a proper clean out & descale.

New bottomless PF turned up - yay!

It's a new one, so not needed thankfully!

Cheers...yeah after a bit of reading I was thinking a cheap electric could be a step backwards... I’ll have a watch of that vid later

half thought about making an attachment for the Hario grinder to power it with a drill or something but have came back down to Earth since

I'll admit I had to do a quick search to find out what this was, it seems like a good idea, thanks :p

It's just a thing to hit the portafilter into. I spent years hitting it into the bin but eventually it will break the bin lol. Plus the grounds can be used as compost.

I like the Sage one actually, it's square as opposed to most round ones. The exterior matches the Gaggia Classic.

whose ? - did you have alternatives for handle/angle/opening-size.

I'll admit I had to do a quick search to find out what this was
the cups, themselves, too ....and keep an eye for cleaning materials citric-acid, puly-caf, blind filter(maybe that's included)
I've just cut a heavy duty polythene bottle in half as a knock box

its a cheap(ish) one from Edesia Espress as i was getting one of their knockout draws. It fits the 21g ims basket perfectly so was happy, would look a little odd with a smaller basket but thats no bother.

The knockout draw is 14cm wide so it sits nicely under my mignon, smaller draws seem pretty hard to find. Not unwrapped it yet though :)

When I was pondering an electric grinder for my Aeropress/moka pot the Wilfa Svart and Baratza Encore both made the short list. I don't think they'd be good options for espresso however.

For espresso the Iberital MC2 is a good option, and cheap at £130, but would be a royal pain to adjust between grind types. I think the next tier up could be something like a Mignon at £250ish for the Manuale or Facile.
