Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

Had some "Costa Rica Finca De Licho 2012" delivered from Hasbean yesterday and loving it, definitely gonna be ordering some more. So smooth :D

Have just finished a bag of this. Is amazingly smooth. Now to go through my other bags. In addition I am slowly converting the rest of my office into quality coffee rather than the tub of instant/coffee machine stuff they usually drink.

My quest for trying to do some half decent latte art is coming along I'm not ready for pictures yet, I have my good and bad days. I think I am finally getting to grips with the steam wand of the gaggia.

If anyone is after something a little left field then Ethiopia Kebel Kercha Sidamo Guji Natural is sublime. If you like a sweet coffee this is one for you. The blueberries really pop out in the flavour and had to get another bag once my "in my mug" bag was finished.

I've not had much luck with Hasbean buys of late, I buy two bags each time and have ended up binning at least one. I can safely say I won't be touching anything with "natural" in the title ever again! The Blake espresso blend is the latest I don't like. Their Philter blend is ok, so at least I get to drink one bag out of this order!

I think the Blake blend has the Ethiopian Guji Natural in it, I can't taste blueberries at all just a background flavour of damp hay that I don't quite feel appealing!

I am drinking Costa Rica Finca De Licho 2012 as I type this, freshly ground into a single mug drip filter. I really like it. It makes an excellent espresso in my Silva as well.
It was part of my monthly coffee subscription that my wife bought for me last xmas. I really like getting a different coffee every month. superb present.

I had one coffee delivered from HB a couple of months ago that was from somewhere unusual like cuba. the notes said "I normally run a mile from coffee from this region". He should have done so in this instance as well, it was rank although it actually turned quite drinkable (if odd) after sitting around in its bag for 10 days.

I'm another in the "naturally processed coffee is just rotted to ruin and only fit for pig feed" camp.

The only one I've ever finished a bag of was way back in 2010 iirc. That was just too weird and completely un-natural like. Fermented bananas was the main smell and taste. Just weird. Great espresso though.

I keep trying, but have yet to find another one I'd actually pay for.

Can anybody recommend a good decaf or two? I have searched but finding it difficult to navigate on my phone! Thanks.

I've bought some of the decaff blends on hasbean to use with my baby, but it does not seem to be going well! The coffee is really weak and no crema. What am I doing wrong? :(

Been challenged to get a decent coffee setup for work. Budget is £300. I am guessing a Gaggia Classic and Grinder? It isn't too hard for everyone to learn and keep clean is it?

the only problem with a single group-head espresso machine is that it can be quite time consuming, especially when making coffee for multiple people.

(Having pre-heated the machine for 10+mins) and made sure it has fresh filtered water in it, you can then only make 2 small espresso (or 1 double) at a time. You then need to leave the coffees lying around whilst you bring the boiler up to steam temp (as the small machines only have a single boiler), drain of the water from the steam wand and then steam the milk.

Having made the coffee (but before you sit down), you have blow out and clean the steam wand and at the end of the day, rinse the basket and use an angled brush to clear the coffee grinds out of the group head. You will also need to descale it periodically using the proper descaler.

It also tend to make a bit of a mess with coffee grinds getting everywhere. And you also need a bin/knock-box to empty the spent coffee into.

it's not trivial and its easy to see why netpresso-type pod systems have caught on in recent times.

I don't know how many people you are thinking will want to use it all at the same time or how wedded you are to espresso based coffee so hard to advise further.

I wouldn;t be without my Rancilio machine and grinder combo tho. It's all part of the craft and great fun. But I am sure there are plenty of people who have bought an espresso machine and then realised what a damn faff it can be at times when all you want is a decent coffee.!

It you all want to drink a coffee together, I would get a grinder (with a range of grinding, not just for espresso) , kettle and nice drip filter and carafe or a large french press.

Thanks for the long reply Ged.

The boss originally wanted something fast, good and low maintenance. He was looking at what these guys do, http://www.ikhofi.co.uk/ after trying it at a customers of ours, but they are too expensive apparently.

He mentioned the Pod systems, but we would easily rake up £5-10 a day using these. So
maybe that isn't the best idea?

I think a filter and grinder system might be the best idea, then we can leave it all day until it needs topping up with coffee. If so, then I guess we have loads of room in our budget?

Edit: At the moment, we occasionally use 2 Phin Filters.

Tell your boss there is fast, [edit] reliable and cheap and he can choose 2.

well if there were say 10 of you, that is not actually mega-bucks...
who is paying for the coffee here, you guys or the boss? Is it just for staff or for customers as well?

just to be clear, I am not advocating making a jug of coffee that then sits around on a hotplate for hours. that would be gross.

have a look at the machines over at

Gaggia Titanium II SS 2012 Ed. LV New Firmware SUPER OFFER !!!

problem is, anything designed for a domestic environment might be dead in 12 months if used in an office environment where it may get 20 x more use.

my gaggia baby dose is struggling to make a decent espresso or steam milk properly, anyone know if its just on its way out or any idea what i might be able to do to get it working properly again??

Ok folks, time for a birthday present to myself.

Did loads of research about 6 months ago to get a espresso machine for my dad. Ended up getting him a Gaggia Classic. (He now uses a Bodum grinder aswell) I'm now converted!

Looking at getting myself a machine. I've got a bit more money to play with if necessary, would it be worth spending more? Seen the bean to cup machines, but I have a feeling everyone will say a seperate grinder would be far better!

So what do people recommend?

I think bean to cup machines have their place in this world.

Not sure how good they are but one thing you have to bare in mind is that if one part fails and it is out of warranty you may have to get a new machine unless you can repair yourself.

I guess the advantage is the inbuilt grinder is calibrated for the machine so no experimenting to get the perfect grind for the machine.

what sort of budget do you have.

I've got a budget of 400 for everything.

After a bit more reading I've definetly moved away from the bean to cup idea. Think I'll go for a machine and grinder, bit more versatile i think!

Are there any shops that I can actually visit to pick up quality coffee accessories? Grinders etc. Has bean don't acceptvisitors and don't have a shop. :(
