Siliconslave's how to make espresso thread

Let us know how your shots turn out, be interested in the difference made. Did you see what it was originally set at?

I measured it at around 12-14 bar, pre-adjustment. Will let you know how my next shots go when I get the chance to pull some :D

Are there any machines which you can recommend for around £200?

Gaggia Classic? - I thought that would have been clear by now? ;)

thanks, I'll have a mooch over at hukd's, I swear I have seen them for £150'ish a while back. I'll just have a look at the last few pages, hopefully beans/ web outlets have been recommended.

Just a quick post. You still have a day or so to go to get this on Kickstarter.

http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/bruer/cold-bruer-a-cold-brew-coffee-system

Now, I like cold brew coffee, I've even assembled something using lab equipment and parts of an aeropress that allows me to make it at home, but this is so much smaller, neater and more importantly, cheaper than what I've got.

Backed to the tune of Bruer and mugs for me. :D

Shame they didn't plan the kickstarter a little better, current plans are arrival in January... Hmmm... Cold brewed coffee in January. Not so sure about that one myself tbh.

After some advice here guys. I am going to be spending around £200.00 on an Espresso Machine and for this kind of budget the consensus leans towards the Gaggia Classic. I noticed the Gran Gaggia over at the Rainforest place, whats the main difference and what would you go for ?

I'm sure it's lovely, but it certainly aint a quick cup o' joe is it? 3 to 12 hours brewing time :eek:

Strewth!

It's certainly not what you'd call rapid. I've tended to average 4-5 hours. 1 drip per second seems to be the preferred rate.

I do have methods for cold served hot brewed coffee, but you generally need to add a sugar syrup to that is the rapid cooling of the coffee makes it go a little sharp and bitter. No need with a cold drip from my experiments. :D

But it's cheaper than the Hario cold brewer and a lot smaller, so the other half will be happy*ish* with it too. :D

would be very interested what you have come up with Flibster as i can get hold of a lot of unwanted laboratory glasswear and may give it a go myself

It was pretty simple, but not exactly subtle.

Clamp stand holding a 600ml Sepratory Funnel, with a second clamp underneath that held the aeropress main body with the metal kaffeologie s filter in the bottom. 60g of coffee on top, then a paper aeropress filter on top of that.

Under the aeropress body was just a Hario glass carafe.

Hmm. My shots are coming out rather weird now (tbh they were similarly weird before i did the OPV mod, so I'm pretty sure that's not the cause here).

When I hit the brew button, there's a slight "puff" of steam, then around 10 seconds later, there's a sudden surge of coffee which fills up a 2oz shot glass in a couple of seconds. There's no channelling or spattering, it just comes out really fast, with no crema. Strangely, the coffee actually tastes okay... not bitter or sour at all.. but doesn't have much in the way of body!

Are these classic "choking" symptoms? Possibly due to the grind being too fine?

I've tried tamping less - that didn't make any difference.

Well I took the plunge and got the Gran Gaggia. Delivered from the Rainforest Yesterday.

Only tried some Illy and Some of the mixes from Starbucks upto now, I think Hasbean will be my goto place at the end of the month :)

Is it worth it for the price? Tempted to get one if it produces a decent coffee and it makes good steam for latte's (preferred drink atm)

Definitely worth it. I can see my intake of Coffee decreasing throughout the day for the sake of a good Espresso in the morning and one when I get home. Mrs L does not like straight up Espresso and prefers Latte and she is more than happy with my efforts :) What I found useful was getting a milk jug and temperature gauge with it.

I would say I am an absolute novice where it comes to stepping up from Instant, Cafatiere or Pod Coffee to this. However by the second attempt I was getting the temperature of the milk just right so the foam was good and consistent. Whether there is a marked difference between this and the Gaggia Classica only those who have had both could tell you. All I can say is that upto now it has been money extremely well spent.

I think you get the basics pretty much out of the box as long as you have read this thread

Okay, tried a few more cappuccinos tonight.... getting really annoyed at my total lack of consistency (and skill, hah!)

My shots are still coming out way too fast (about 13 seconds tops), this is using 19g, a bottomless portafilter, OPV mod and a fine enough grind (IMO anyway).

One thing I have noticed tonight.... which I'm guessing is not a good thing! Is the fact that one of the rubber tubes that sits in the water reservoir, is way shorter and doesn't actually reach the water level (I must have somehow caused this when I opened it up to make the OPV modifications).

What impact will that have? Is one tube for intake and the other for... dumping?!

Not sure about your machine, but on the Rancilio there's two pipes - one is an intake the other is the "overflow" for either if the machine gets choked/stalled or for when the solenoid opens to relieve the pressure after brewing or backflushing. The overflow pipe is nowhere near the water level :)

Decided to make my grind a bit finer and increase the dosage to around 19g... resulting in a 25sec shot :D

Made a bit of a boo-boo however, I accidentally left the steam switch on while I was preparing the second drink, which (I'm guessing) resulted in the water being too hot, which meant my second shot was a bit burnt (?) Definitely tasted different, plus the crema was much darker.

At least I think I'm slowly getting closer to a much better shot!

Look out everyone... It's a steamer! :D

You essentially made an espresso shot with steam. You're not the first person to do it, and won't be the last. I've done it myself. :D It's not good, completely burns the coffee.

I tended to pour the milk into the jug and prepare the coffee in the portafilter while the machine makes steam. Steam the milk and then purge the steam and run some water through the grouphead, then pull the shot. I found it more efficient that way on a basic machine. Not everyone does, but I did.

Wooo managed to make a couple of decent cappuccinos in succession!

Maybe I'm a bit paranoid since doing the OPV mod, but is it normal for there to be a bit of a puff of steam when initially flicking the brew switch? Also, as I'm waiting for it to heat up, there seems to be a feint bubbling/steam releasing kinda noise... is that normal?
