It doesn't really hurt. It's static, so it has very little potential (or is it current? I can't remember which!) Either way it's good fun :)
 
doesnt hurt try telling our physics teacher left it running and moved the other sphere you use to get the electricity to jump(you see a nice spark)from vander graph to the sphere. He left it about two feet apart and was running quite a while forgot it was on a walking by bango a two foot zap :D :D loudest swearing wed heard in a while.
 
We used it at school, and i actually got electric shocks from the plastic tray we were supposedly insulated from the floor with. Yeah right. Hurt like hell sparking through my shoe.
