It doesn't really hurt. It's static, so it has very little potential (or is it current? I can't remember which!) Either way it's good fun

doesnt hurt try telling our physics teacher left it running and moved the other sphere you use to get the electricity to jump(you see a nice spark)from vander graph to the sphere. He left it about two feet apart and was running quite a while forgot it was on a walking by bango a two foot zap loudest swearing wed heard in a while.

it also hurts if you let go whilst its on.... remember lightning is only static

We used it at school, and i actually got electric shocks from the plastic tray we were supposedly insulated from the floor with. Yeah right. Hurt like hell sparking through my shoe.
