Silly power requirements, an over hyped myth?

how is the koolance doing for you?

for the on-topic post:
367w, pc as per sig except running 3100mhz/1.65v while playing wow (windowed so gfx isnt in full clock mode!)

To factor in efficieny yiou need at least a 500w supply then for that power consumption. Maybe a bit more.

you are thinking the wrong way around, he is measuring the drain at the wall, not the output of the PSU. Inefficiencies happen inside the PSU, causing ti to drain more power from the wall than it gives out.

At 80% efficiency (fairly average for a decent PSU nowadays), that means the PSU is outputting about 320W internaly to the system. Given that high power PSUs generaly have poor efficiency at low loadings, it could well be even less.

Still going.

Upto 3.5GHz now.

Do your nieghbours lights go out when you're playing with your PC? :p

Forno do you think I could get away with an oced quad (Q6600) from what you have seen?
Tbh you'd be pushing it.

I've put some numbers in that so you can see the wattage for the cpu oc.

http://newstuff.orcon.net.nz/wCalc.html

Q6600 = 105W TDP @ Stock, 2400Mhz, 1.275v. (TDP's maybe 10% less than the max as well and voltages are real not software)

3.6 Ghz, 1.55v approx 232W, haha forget it, moving on.

3.4 Ghz, 1.425v approx 185W, could be more

3.0 Ghz, 1.375v, approx 152W, just about tops out your psu, not recommended.

At stock the wattage is about the same as your oced E6600.

Nice thread, just spotted it. Thanks for finally putting this to rest - I find it a bit annoying when people ask for PSU advice and everyone starts quoting 700W PSUs for a Core 2 / single gfx card setup :p

Very nice read that, My PSU is only meant to have a 24a 12v rail according to Antec (truepower 550)
I run a [email protected], 2 gig ram and 2900XT and it seems fine, maybee I am right on the limits, will have to get one of those meters to see exactly what I am drawing.

This one?

http://www.antec.com/specs/true550_spe.html

Assuming a light load on the 3.3v & 5v rails then its 30A @ 12V. Btw it has one of the worst efficiencies ratings I've ever seen. If it managed 550W you'd be paying for 808W

Well to be fair, I have had it at least two years and when I got it, it was one of the best PSU's available.
Whatever the efficiency ratings are on paper, it has been a top PSU, so dont believe all you read and as I say it is running my PC comfortably.

The efficiency has no effect on its performance, just running cost. As for believing it, the manufacturer is hardly going to quote such a poor rating unless its true. In fact efficiency curves are bell shaped and they always quote the best point. I'm just pointing out that 1/3 of its consumption is as wasted heat.

Ahh right I thought you meant a performance thing as it seems fine in that respect, I dont really keep an eye on the electric just pay what it costs perhaps you should.
Trouble is when you are trying to keep us with new hardware where does it stop.
There is always something bigger and better than you have, even though when you bought it, it was considered one of the best.
Dont think I need a PSU anytime soon, but I will be sure to check out the efficiency rating out next time, funny when I got it there was no rating that I saw, just everyone on this forum saying how great the PSU was.
Things move on though and things get better with development as is the case here.
How does Antecs latest offering scale up then compared to other PSU's

anyone tried plugging a PS3/360 into one of those the meters to see what their power consumption is?

Ok done this test for you with my 360.

Idle (360 Dashboard Mode) = 134w

In Game = 165w

This is nothing compared to our systems.
