hi, sorry if this has been covered (and im sure it has been on a lot of occassions) but i have had over the past 3 years (i think) the iphone 3GS and now the iphone 4.
now my ex wife has said she would give me £250 for my iphone 4. so my 2 questions are :
1. is this a good price
2. what would be a decent alternative (has similar features/apps etc)

The Samsung Galaxy SII is a good phone, a friend moved from the iPhone 4 to it and never looked back. However it seems to be about ~£350 on it's own...

Yea I can't see £250 getting you much brand new - SSGII for £350 new is a good shout - should last you a while.

there's every chance if you've had iphones for so long that you'll dislike android after the initial wow, thats certainly how I found it. Had iphones since the first one and tried xperia arc, galaxy s, galaxy s2 and now I've concluded I just don't like android.

On the other hand it could go the other way. Hated, I mean loathed my iphone 4 having made the collosal mistake of going from a sg2 to it. If you want complete freedom with a phone operating system then go for android. The straw that broke the camel's back was when I found out you couldn't even back your contacts to sim using an iphone (without using icloud, Itunes and having to set up an Apple ID). Good luck. I am now the happy owner of an Android Xperia S :)

Edit: Forgot to recommend a Sony Arc S as an "inbetween phone" for about £230.00 (if you decided Android could be for you). others might recommend something else. By way of incentive, I found that many apps were free (from android) yet you would have to pay for if you stayed with Iphone.
Testing an Android phone would be a good idea (as suggested below).

from what I can tell it seems to be people settle into one camp or the other, seeing as the chap has had a couple of iphones I'd guess it's fair to assume he likes it.

Basically I'd strongly suggest testing an android phone before shelling out a load of cash, thats all :)

i dont particually like my iphone as such, its just before my 3GS i had the nokia 5800 XpressMusic and well, it was awful. so i upgraded to my 3GS when my contract allowed me and kind just got the 4 as it seemed the right thing at the time.
i havent used android but i cant see any touchscreen OS being too different to the others (are they not all just icons you touch?)

Nokia Lumia 710? Can't see myself using anything else really as it all feels so dated after using Windows Phone. Yes I'm a massive fanboy nowadays, but using a friends iphone it just all seemed so bland to use it.

I have a Lumia 800 but the main difference between it and the 710 is the body, camera and lack of an Amoled screen.

This of course assumes they're still selling at around £170 like they were last time I checked.

will it take my iphone simcard? (cant remember if the 4 used the smaller one or not)

Nokia site says sime free is £169.95

agreed.. and no, every touchscreen OS is NOT the same!

If that were true you could use Bada or even worse.... Symbian!

Android is a geeks wet dream, you can tweak it so much you can break it. I have no doubt that if you're a power user it's awesome. However I found the marketplace full of rubbish and the experience quite bitty unlike iOS which whilst being a tad more restrictive (ie you can't have dozens of different keyboards/hack the life out of it unless you JB) it does totally "just work".

I'm sure lots of people will turn up and go on about iOS crashing but as a serious user for years I reckon I've had maybe 3 or 4... "the application has been forced to close" etc was a regular occurrence for me on Android.

I also spent 4 months with WP7.

It looks lovely, the marketplace is dreadful (there isn't even a bbc news app, angry birds is about £3 and the twitter implementation is dreadful) and IMO the novelty wears off rapidly.

I love these remarks from iphone users "just works"

Do the GS 2, HTC one S/X, Galaxy nexus/nexus etc. etc. not "just work" out of the box as well especially sense powered handsets?

Just because you get an android handset does not mean that you have to faff about with replacing every app etc. and changing every setting.

Both are exactly the same essentially, except on IOS you are restricted a lot and don't have any where as much choice even if JB when compared to android.

As for hardware/software faults, both are just as bad as each other really, see plenty of people complaining about battery drain etc. in the 4s thread and screen issues with yellow tinting etc.

EDIT:

Whilst android market might not be as good as apples market (yet) it has a lot of good apps that are feature full and work great and in some cases far better than IOS equivalents. Again the apps are just there for choice, some people are happy with the stock experience of sense, stock ICS etc. however, plenty of people want to be able to customize things to their liking and have certain features and at least if you wish to do this stuff on android, you can do it very easily without having to root and flash a custom ROM etc., where as with the iphone, you can't, you have to JB it first.........

Also you must have installed dodgy apps or messed a setting up on your android phone if you kept getting those messages.

EDIT 2:

And as a HTC one S user (I have also replaced a lot of stock apps with 3rd party ones, have over 65 apps installed), I have had no problems except 2 crashes, which may have been related to a beta app. And my bro has had no problems with his stock 2.2 HTC desire either in the last 2 years, I don't think he has even had a crash.......

The 4 uses a micro sim as does the new Sony Xperia S (Android). The guys on here will tell you what sim a particular phone would use. It took me about 2 days to replace a standard sim to micro sim so I'm assuming it would be the same, or thereabouts in reverse.
One of the many disappointments concerning apps for me was the fact that for an iphone I would have to pay for call blocking software where it was free on android. The same also for medication and drug guides. I found that every app I previously used on my sg2 (Android) which was free, I had to pay for on Iphone.
IOS was also mundane and restrictive. It was like the functionality associated with the operating system never truly felt owned but rented and consequenctially lacking in personality and choice.
