I'm pap at maths, as this will prove:

100km x 100km map/area..

Is that 1,000km^2, 10,000km^2 or different?

Could someone also jot the long equation out please?

My guess was:

100km = 100,000m

100,000m x 100,000m = 10,000,000,000m^2

10,000,000,000m^2 = <unf! stuck here!> km^2

And am probably ghastily wrong.
No, this is not for homework/coursework/project/work/Gameshow/Gestapo.

TIA :)

100 x 100
= 10,000

so it's 10,000km², as in, there are 10,000 square kilometres. The conversion from metre squared proves tricky as it's not 1000m² in a km², there are 1,000,000

100 x 100 is 100^2 :confused:

100,000 x 100,000 m is 100,000^2

When you convert back to km^2 you can't just divide by 1000 as thats for converting m to km. As it's m^2 you have to divide by 1000000 as thats 1000x1000.

1m² = 0.000001km²

1 km² = 1,000,000 m²

so 10,000,000,000/1,000,000 = 10,000km²

Stop calling them m^2 and km^2.

Call them Gwedolyn and Faffna instead - that should lessen the confusing proliferation of circumflexes.

Then you can concentrate on multiplying units of ten.

(Top Tip: Just add extra zeros)

No, as there are more than 100km^2 in a 100km x 100km area. (100 rows of 100km.. am going back to primary school with this one :/)

Which solves the first bit...

Google helped me achieve that 100km x 100km = 10,000,000,000m^2.

http://www.google.co.uk/search?hl=en&q=100km+x+100km+=+&meta=

And now I am simply stumped :/
There are 1,000,000m² in a km². Should end stumpage.

To work out an area of rectangle or square in this case, you multiply your two lengths together.

So its 100km * 100km which is (100 x 100)km^2

Indeed, you can treat it algebraically (km is one entity). In that 100km x 100km is the same as (100x100) x (km x km) = 10,000km²
