Simple program to permit/deny applications network access?

Hello.

I'm looking a simple permit/deny type program (not full firewall) to limit what programs can access the internet and call home etc. I remember back in the day when using Zone Alarm to do this and found it quite effective, but otherwise rubbish. What is the modern day recommendation?

I hate software firewalls. I just wanted a program that can permit and deny applications only.

The trouble is, what you are describing is an application firewall. Have you disabled the Windows firewall?

What's wrong with them? The Windows Firewall is very capable and does not get in the way. Also as theheyes has said, the kind of application you are after will basically be a software firewall.
