Simply awesome

That's what we're getting at - you want a car with qualities normally desired by someone who is about to start drawing a pension...

*n

Not really, I use my car most days when I'm working, I also use it to drive to France. I'm 22.

I want something that's refined, fast, great looking, reliable, able to chomp through motorway miles effortlessly, able to seat four comfortably, handle brilliantly, return decent fuel economy, as well as looking the part in any of my client's car parks - all at sensible money.

It's not a compromise, it fulfils all these needs superbly.

As for pensions, I think the owner of a 1.2l Chevette is more likely to drawing one than the owner of a 530i tbh :p

What, like great performance? Good handling? Sporty styling?

Yea, most pensioners have that high on their list.

Remind me again what redeedming features the Vauxhall Chevette 1.2, a car which genuinelly WAS desired by those drawing pensions, has please?

You guys are talking as if I've just decided my next car should be a Vauxhall Vectra 1.9 CTDi 120 Automatic in Envoy specification....

What I'm saying is that most guys in their early 20's put refinement and comfort very low on thier wish list. They simply want something that looks good (and not in a dull, sales rep way), and rips your face off when you plant the loud pedal. Refinement and comfort doesn't usually play a part.

But hey, we're all different etc. etc.

Oh, and I'd be willing to bet that Penski's Shuv is much more fun, and gives much more driver involvment than most of the stuff in this thread.

Come on Drexel, you are far too knowledgable and experienced a guy to start saying things like a 1.2 litre Chevette will be more fun than something like a 330Ci or a 530/535i.

Thats dream-land stuff, that is.

In the Chevette we are talking about a car which, in its time, was derided almost as much as Corsas are today!

Fox, didn't we have this discussion a little while back? Your definition of 'fun', and other peoples' definitions of 'fun' don't necessarily come out to be the same :)

I would have thought that my definition of fun would be closer to Drexels than it would to, say, penski's.

To a certain extent, you can hide behind that irritating 'different strokes' things and make all sorts of outrageous remarks.

Such as 'IMHO, a Corsa 1.2 8v is more fun than a Mazda RX7' ;)

Mike does like to give his car some too you know. :p

The only thing in the fun department that bmw has going for it over the shuv is that it's faster.

the shuv is lighter, with no driver aids. you will get better feeback through the steering wheel, through the brake pedal and generally have a hell of a lot more of a clue what the car is doing as you won't be wrapped in the warm comfort blanket of bmwville.

Driver aids? Didn't know you can just press a button and turn them off?

Oh look, no driver aids. And whats this, yes an actually half decent chassis and some power to go with that RWD drivetrain...

Guys I know that everyone has different ideas of fun but come on, to seriously suggesting that a 1.2 litre Vauxhall shopping car from the early 1980's is more fun in every way bar speed than a modern, rear drive, 3 litre BMW with plenty of power is just lunacy, really it is, and those who actually believe have their glasses tinted even more towards crap old junk from the 80's than I do towards BMW's :p

Not to mention one is a quality car and the other a shed?

Now come on, that's just uncalled for. Fox is going to be buying a BMW soon, he doesn't need to hear "shed" comments about his vehicle of choice.

:D

since when has quality had any effect on 'fun'?

the quality of the interior of your mr2 will be crap compared to an s class but your car will be a hell of a lot more fun

But the MR2 has power steering and servo assistance on the brakes, so clearly, if its fun you are after you need a Vauxhall Chevette 1.2 not an MR2 Turbo.

i was primarily referring to PAS and ABS, not tractions control and esptfljhqOMGWTFBBQ or whatever systems you get on bmws

ABS and PAS are on nearly every single car made... well, for ages now.

Clio 182, you saying that is less fun than a Chevette?

Ferrari 360?

I don't deny hooning around in an RWD banger can be a laugh - I bet even I would enjoy it. But to cite it as a credible alternative to something like a 330i, or even to suggest its 'probably much more fun', is just laughable :)

Your car has PAS, LOL NO FEEDBACK AHAHAHA.

You should have bought a Ford Cortina instead.

Now you're being slightly silly Fox. I don't think any of us that beat the drum for older cars have ever said "OMGZZZZ PAS AND BRAKE SERVOS ARE THE DEVILS WORK". Sure, I quite like driving cars without them, but I can also have fun in cars with them.

I wouldnt say the beauty of a 3 or 5 series (unless its an M) was worth making a thread about as I can see 3 from my window. They are great cars but I dont look twice at them. That may change once I own one, but for the time being they are not all that. The same goes for most of Penski's car choices. If I was going to title a thread Simply Awesome you would see a picture of the new Alfa 8C.
