Simply awesome

Dull is the correct word, yes.

Ask yourself this question - Which car (as an enthusiast) do you find more interesting? penski's Chevette or the BMW 330ci Clubsport?

If its the latter, I'd love to know what you find interesting about it. :)

Honestly? Penski's Chevette. The BMW is completely non-interesting because it looks.............like another BMW.

Penski's Chevette is interesting because you don't see them every day, it's raw, it has a certain 'charm' about it.

Aye. Exactly how I feel too. It's a car that would turn your head. :)

Drexel, that question wasn't supposed to be directed right at you - its for the whole forum. I am just seeing who the "interesting" people are. :D ;)

I've not driven a BMW and I don't own a car.

Yes it make's me a keyboard warrior to a certain extent but my opinion is still valid :)

Post of the year so far.
Good work :D

I had a chevette about 8 years ago, i used it to travel to glasto for my night shifts at the festival, i knew it wouldnt be nicked or trashed, but if it was it wouldnt matter.
wasnt the worst car i have ever driven for sure!

Fox, it must be very hard for you to understand why someone thinks a 'shuv is fun when you have not even driven one. You can't judge 'fun' by comparing two cars on paper.

fox has very black and white opinions tho, we all know this. we all know that he doesnt understand why someone would pay more for a 306 than a xsara for example. its one of the things we all love about fox :p

What I'm saying is that most guys in their early 20's put refinement and comfort very low on thier wish list. They simply want something that looks good (and not in a dull, sales rep way), and rips your face off when you plant the loud pedal. Refinement and comfort doesn't usually play a part.

But hey, we're all different etc. etc.

Oh, and I'd be willing to bet that Penski's Shuv is much more fun, and gives much more driver involvment than most of the stuff in this thread.

Yup who needs aircon, leather and all other toys when as soon as you put the pedal flat to the floor and the turbo spools up you forget about leather, aircon, heated seats etc and smile! :D I love my car, yes its a Rover, it hasnt got the best interior! But i love it! Plus i wont cry like a little girl after ive gien it some stick and bent it :p

Don't get me wrong, I don't dislike the 330 (or any of the quicker BMWs), they are great cars. I just don't think they could ever be described as awesome looking, or automotive pron. They look dull.

But thats the beauty of opinions - see, I fail to see how people find the majority of Japanese cars beautiful looking - styling is never something I think the Japs have always got right - but lots of people do, and I respect their opinion to think that :)

The chevette might be more interesting but I'd rather drive the bmw everyday if I had the money to choose them equally, as a car in general its the better one though I love an underdog as much as anyone

I think there are very few people in this thread who have driven a Shuv. I guess there is a small possibility that this late 70's city-runabout with a 1.2 litre engine may have been designed purely with driver fun and driver involvement in mind, and not simple as a 70's equivilent of the Corsa, but I would think it's unlikely.. :p

Besides, would it be entirely reasonable for me to go around saying 'ahahahahahha, a Trabant is so much fun to fling than a 205 GTi' safe in the knowledge that nobdy here has driven a Trabant, assuming that they must simply take my word for it and are not allowed to challenge my opinion on that basis? :p

olv hasn't even got a car, let alone driven a single BMW in his entire life yet nobody is telling him he can't have an opinion - which, IMHO, is reasonable.

Now, I appreciate the Shuv is a laugh - using the analogy I used earlier perhaps in the same way that dodgy falling lift ride in Disneyland is a laugh - but it must be a laugh not because it's a great to drive, perfectly setup drivers car but becuase it's rough, ready and raw not through design but simply by age. You can't say it's fun becuase of its ability - it's simply a byproduct of its old and dodderyness :p

A 205 GTi is fun becuase it was made that way. An Austin Maxi is fun becuase... well, it'd old, naff and unpredictable. You can't argue with either but you can't use the latter to say its better/preferable to the former, right?

One last thing on this group of replies.

Isn't it funny how on the one hand you all constantly tell me how the BMW looks dull, how it can't possibly look awesome, yada yada, but then on the other you tell me everyone is entitled to their opinions, everyone likes different things, etc etc.

You can't have it both ways, which is it? ;)

The chevette is a lot lighter which does put a lot of points in its favour when it comes to the fun factor imo

And a Peugeot 106 XND Graduate is a lot lighter than a Ferrari 575M, infact probably half the weight.

Which would put the bigger smile on YOUR face?

Weight is only one part of the story - sure, it's actually very important, but in isolation it's less useful than you think. You need the rest of the jigsaw as well..

I'll be honest, I am simply dumbfounded that people are trying to argue so much about the Chevette. I'm not really sure how to further-word my opinion on this, it just makes me think 'huh'.

It really is the equivilent of being on this forum in 20 years time with half the people trying to say 'you really are underestimating how much fun the 1.2 8v Corsa LS is - its often far more fun than the new E600 BMW M3 or the SL90 AMG you know'. Don't argue it isn't, becuase it is - the Corsa is the modern day Chevette :p

If the Chevette was so amazing why, in its day, was it left purely to the old people to go shopping in whilst everyone after fun had a Golf GTi, An R5, a 205 GTi or a Lotus Cortina?

Penski's Chevette puts such a smile on his face he's SORNED it and uses the bus for work!

surely people can think that the bmw is dull but still respect your opinion that you find it attractive. i know i do and i don't think anyone is disputing that.

The ferrari but it obviously has much more power per ton, if they had the same power to weight ratio it might be a closer match prehaps

Ferrari 575M
Kerb weight: 1730 kg
Maximum power: 515 hp

Peugeot 106 XND Graduate
58 bhp 1527cc engine (gti has 120 which is a lot more like it tbh)
Guessed weight: 700kg

So if you could get the power on the 106 upto about 210bhp then I reckon it might be as fun as a ferrari to drive, not as fine or fast prehaps but as fun sure :) Obviously the ferrari is by far the better car, not arguing that or the bmw isnt, etc

But the same thing applies to the Chevette, its what, 50bhp and 700kg?

So 71 bhp/tonne versus 149bhp/tonne for the 330.

Also, your reference to the 106 GTi - you'd have no complaints/challenges from me if you said 'A 106 GTi can be more fun than a 330i' becuase I would totally agree.
