Shelling out £250 odd on a set of 2.0 speakers that will be hooked up to a PC cab be a little much given the fact MP3s etc dont carry a high enough bit rate to really warrant spending that much cash. Uncompressed music however would be perfect however the likely hood of having such lovely clarity on the PC is rather slim...

After a little hunting I came across the Edifier R1600T Plus

Heres a few pictures and my thoughts on the units.

First up the box...

As you can see, the box is a rather attractive looking unit clearly advertising the product and its specifications whilst maintaining a clean and classy appearance.

The provided cables are very basic but do the job. This is all you need to be able to connect these up to your sound card for the best possible 2.0 experience. The cable that connects the passive speaker to the active unit is of surprisingly good quality but is by no means what I would class as a good cable. This will to a certain extent reduce the quality of the audio but this reduction will be that minor that you will not be able to tell the difference between this and a cable of £50+ a meter you may find yourself buying if you had separates and a dedicated amp.

Above shows the speakers with the front panels attached. Very neat and minimalist without looking cheap.

Removing these front panels reveals the 18mm tweaters and 4.5" woofers. It is clear by looking at these that these are quality units. They (although this is not visible) are magnetically shielded and and are constructed using a composite cone structure for a balanced acoustics and a neatly housed in an all wood enclosure.

On the left we have the passive speaker and on the right we have the active unit which has the amplifier built in that powers both of the monitors.

1299619814.jpg

The active monitor has the facility to connect up two audio devices so in this case a sound card and a MP3 player for testing. The built in amp powers two channels at 16W RMS per channel powering both of the speakers. This may not sound like much however due to the quality of the crossover the power these deliver is exceptional giving the facility to produce volumes that competing manufacturers will happily throw acclaimed 100W RMS or more at.

The above image illustrates the volume control along with dials to allow the alteration of the base and higher tones. The only down side to this is that mid tones are left to be altered by a combination of the two dials which unfortunately gives a little less control over the overall tone that the speakers can produce. This is not too much of an issue but for the cost of the units is easily overlooked and forgotten about.

And below.. the money shot!

As you can see... Very nice professional looking monitors!

Nice piece of maketing, might I suggest borrowing a better camera as well next time? ;)

Shame I can't find any good independant reviews as they look to be just the sort of thing I'm after as I seem to be listening to more and more music in my office.

I was only joking! I've been considering them along with a couple of other options for a few weeks now. I seem to be spending more and more time working from home and the ancient crummy speakers plugged into my PC have become increasingly disapointed. Just can't decide wether to buy a cheap t-amp and use an old pair of Wharfedale Cubes I have lying around or spend a few quid more on something like this.

I know, hence the smile lol. It really is quite funny how bad a phone camera can be when the light levels drop below day light and into artificial...

I myself have a good £2k worth of speakers and AMP and they are actually shown up in the odd instance by these... quality wise I would put them on par until you reach 3/4 volume after which the dedicated set up excels.

Atm i cant afford a 5.1 home cinema, but im getting Sky HD soon and was thinking about getting these to go with it, through the RCA cables, do you reckon it would be worth it?

It would sound very nice as the speakers are not boomy like you would get from any 2.1 or 5.1 set up and the clarity is very nice adding that little extra :)

Can't seem to find any information on frequency response anywhere? Seems daft when they list these as professional speakers in their "Studio" range on their site. That's one of the first things I look for.

Any ideas anyone?

Generally they are and any speaker system with a dedicated sub has a slight boom to it but more so with PC related speakers for some reason.

Generally people buy £15 2.1 setups. A quality and properly setup sub shouldn't boom. You can't just say it will sound better because it doesn't have a sub. It will sound better than a 2.1 setup at this price because you can't buy 2 amplifiers, 2 speakers, a subwoofer and nice cabinets for all for £70.

I'd be putting my money on a second hand amp and speakers, but this is obviously a more compact solution and aimed at a different market.

You need to be spending around triple this on the sub alone to have any sort of musicality; it's simply a question of budget.

You can't say all Ferraris suck because you bought a rubbish 30 year old dog for £5,000. Keeping with that metaphor, it buys a decent Ford ;)

Without wishing to offend, they look a bit like cheap tat, £250 you say? and they aren't even proper active! the drivers look terrible quality.

You could get some proper pro active monitors for that.

No, they are 70 quid, he said £250 would be stupid money to spend to listen to mp3s as they're rubbish. Which is in itself deluded.

Well encoded MP3s, especially over 256kb sound VERY VERY good, and you definitely will be reaching the limits of this kind of crap speaker system well before the limit of such an MP3.

Interesting mini review with some nice photos, but there is some very strange comments in this thread! I would be seriously worried if a £2k separates system is on a par with these, find high quality MP3s to be perfectly fine on a decent setup and don't find my 2.1 stereo setup boomy at all...

For what they are £70 seems ok value, and will likely give better results than the flashy logitech type equivilants. If they are able to compete with any well matched £200 separate system though they must be the bargain of the century and I'll have a pair for every room.

Can't agree there, a B.K Monolith in the right room and properly setup is a musical sub imo, very powerful too. When I last looked they weren't any where near £750, more like £450 I believe.

These are £70, therefore triple that would be about £210...

Its all relative. minimum volume would be near the same regardless of any set up hence the mentioning of volumes.

As said, that impressed I have a set myself and cannot fault them in the slightest. Everyone knows how good the Aego Ms are however when it comes to music the Aego Ms are outclassed and thats going from someone who owns both (see pic) :)

i actually personally find that it's at the lower volumes that better stuff shines, some cheaper stuff needs a bit more volume to sort itself out and things can get a bit muddy at night time listening volumes.

I personally think that my second hand setup would kick these into next week :D

Mission m32i and a marantz sr4200, cost me about £70-80 in total and is very very good for use in my computer room. Could probably get more out of the budget by getting a stereo amp instead of an AV amp, but that wouldve required an outlay for a soundcard too, so for a low budget was a very good compromise.
