Singapore Grand Prix 2012, Marina Bay - Race 14/20

The difference between the two tyres seems so big I wonder if the SS could be the favoured race tyre?

I guess it depends on the degradation.

Also, as there's so few overtaking opportunities, it's going to really screw your race if you're over a second quicker than the car in front (due to tyres) but can't get past them.

Im not convinced, Damon is suggesting that they are being lunched after just 1 hot lap. They could be all used up during Quali.

Its more likely that they would just do very short first stints on the SS and then change to the Softs for the rest of the race.

What's the reason for F1 always having the finish/timing line so close to the last corner?

If it was much further down the straight we might see more overtakes and photo finishes like we do in MotoGP.

The finish line is in line with Race Control to allow for manual time keeping should there be a catastrophic systems failure. Race Control is often at the start of the pit lane to allow for manual control and recording of people entering the pits too.

The grid is then positioned in the best way to get everyone lined up, which is often much further down the track.

Makes some sense I guess. IMO it should be where the lights are. To do manual timing you'd need 24 guys with stop watches plus someone timing the actual race duration.

I'd imagine they would drop timing and just go for lap counting to track positions. But either way, the people who would be doing it are all going to be sat in race control. No good if that's 300m down the track from the finish line.

Report - http://www.autosport.com/news/report.php/id/102695

Force India's looking good. P3 tomorrow at 11am.

It was hard to tell how good the RBR was from FP2 because Hamilton had issues with both of his flying laps on SS tyres. However, if FP1 and 2 are anything to go by, we should see a strong red bull today/tomorrow.

FP3 and quali tomorrow should be interesting and the SS/S comparison still isn't clear over race distance.
