Just a heads up - the open beta for SoASE : Rebellion has started (I just got an email confirming that download is available).

For those that haven't played / heard of Sins - it's a very large scale 3D space-based strategy game. It's a 'real-time' game, but in terms of gameplay it perhaps has more in common with "4x" type games. Well worth a go - so long as you're prepared to lose hundreds of hours to it!

Edit: Are youtube links not working properly, or am I just being a dumbass?

Trailer looks like nice high poly ships but i bet that is just cgi and not really what the ships in the expansion would be like at all or as cool as the ships in the vid.

Would be nice to know what the details of the expansion pack are and if its just bits and bobs added on like the last 2 exp packs or if its more like a sequel but not quite then i would probably be interested. What i would like to see is more ship types, more tech, some better grouping options and formations and better stuff for modders to get the trek mod or any type of mod more things to tweak and be less hard coded.

Btw if you have not tried the star trek mod i urge you to. It is rather fun in mp.

It's $30 if you have Trinity and are logged into your Stardock account. You can get another 10% off by using the coupon "SURVEY2011".

:p Beta is currently downloading on steam :p

here's a vid showing the new engine and gfx ingame from the beta, looks superb !!

If it looks that good I will eat my virtual hat. That must be cgi surely? Always regretted not playing the first one.

The OP's link is CGI, the vid I posted isn't and looks pretty damn sweet. If I get the beta up and running after I'll grab some footage and pic's providing It's not under some NDA blah blah !

Yeah it does look sweet. Only problem i had with the game was that AI wasn't that great and MP took a million years to complete a game. Any news on improvements to these moans?

I dunno. In games like these, I always just end up playing skirmishes anyway. Lack of a campaign never bothered me in Sins.

Saw that utube vid of it playing and it looked nice the lighting and casting shadows which i just looked in trinity and couldnt see them. Looks more like hw2 now due to lighting and shadows. Looks like it could be a nice addition but no way im gona pay more than a fiver or so for an exp pack tho. As its not a whole new game so why pay that much.

Hope its dx11 that way they could do bigger battles with the added performance dx11 brings.

Tho i have to say the game on what was shown in the vid with lighting and that, it seems pretty much the same game just nicer lighting and shadows and maybe higher res textures on the ships. The interface looks more or less the same and a mess of icons on the side of the screen as usual which i hoped they redesigned to get rid of that and make it more streamlined.

Oh and one other nitpick. Ships still look samey in scale i.e cap ships dont really look massive things to me, the self casting shadows help somewhat but it still doesnt look massive and to be feared.

Edit - Found this posted yesterday that might interest some of you here.

Ya just looks like the same game with a few tweaks and graphical updates :(, the modders have been doing it already!

Fair points of which I kinda of agree with but you don't change a winning formula, you make subtle changes that benefit the game. For example, millions of people pay for CoD churn every year which is basically the same game with different levels. 'Rebellion' could be seen as an addon with a graphic overhaul but hopefully the faction dynamics will help add to the whole experience. £16 (if you own previous games) is imo quite fair and considering it has no DRM and a team that liases with it's customers and promotes modding.
