Sins of a solar empire - unusually low hardware requirements

Just finished another 2v1 lol (Almost got beat then.. really dont have the confidence to go any higher) took me 5 hours with an ally to beat the computer...

Well I just tried a 9 computer 10 player game with like 70 planets across 4 star systems and was doing great until 5 of them ganged up on me. You got to defend one place and they attack another, then you split forces to defend the other place and they attack another different place with lots of ships! Gits. have to try to get friendly with some next time :D

Sounds like the A.I is really good better than other rts. Shame i really want it, but its only dl.

Well ive just bought it off the official site. Ive bought the retail copy which comes with the dl version aswell. Im gonna wait for my retail copy to come, so does that still mean ive got to dl the stardock central thing?

On large maps, you can usually make allies fairly easily, almost without trying.

Other than the occasional 'give metal/credits/crystal' ones, most of the factions will give you missions to attack one of the enemies. When this coincides with the enemy you're currently attacking, you can usually get a cease fire with that faction. It's important to always take the cease fires in large maps, or you run the risk of being overrun. When you own half the map you can go ahead and break your treaties all you like :)

I played a 10-player (9 AI plus me in a FFA) the past two nights, and by 2/3 the way through I had alliances with 4 of the remaining 5 factions, without going out of my way to complete any of their missions.

Yup, but to be fair I found the downloader really easy to use and unobstrusive, plus you dont need to use it to play the game which is exactly as it should be :)

Well I did make friends with one of the AI, then i attacked another AI and nuked one of their planets, but forgot to take a colony ship with me to cap it, so the friendly AI decided he wanted the planet instead and capped it so I thought bugger that and attacked him and retook my hard won planet! Needless to say the friendship went downhill from there and he had the biggest fleet and then decided to go all out attack on me. :D

For some reason, I can't get on either the official site, nor the Stardock site. It seems that my ISP (AOL) has blacklisted those sites, just as they blacklisted the Belkin site.

...and you're happy with your ISP censoring what websites you're allowed to visit on the connection that you pay for? Phone them up and tell them to get it sorted out!

We've phoned them up many times, and it isn't just me either. Lots of people were shocked to find that they couldn't download the latest firmware update for their shiny new belkin routers (I purchased one of their nice Draft-n models).

A group of folks over at one of the broadband support forums informed OFCOM, but apparently, OFCOM held that AOL was not in the wrong.

Furthemore, although I'm on their 8MB service, at peak times, I only get around 1MB (or less). I get 5MB at off-peak times, which isn't too bad I guess. My download speeds are regularly slower than my upload speeds. Again, I have contacted them several times regarding this, and some of their techs have told me that their is probably a flaw in their end, but, when they transfer me to the appropriate department, they tell me that the speeds I am getting are acceptable.

Thankfully, my contract expires next month. Trouble is, I live in Hickville, and decent ISPs are few and far between.

Well ive just done the tutorial seems ok, but im sure its easy to learn but hard to master type games.
Ive just had about 40mins on 1v1 random small map, and i thought it was brilliant. There seems to be so much too it, i loved it when the pirates were taunting saying avast me:p then they attacked i wasnt ready:(:D

Was doing well on my second turn until it crashed! Ah well an omen to go to bed as its monday tomorrow!!

One thing however - does anyone know how to build in asteroid belts? It says the resources are able to be captured but I dont know what units to use!

Take a colony frigate to capture lone mines. Next to the colonise command there is a 'crew extraction' option. But anyway it should do it automatically if you get it close enough.

this is why its good, but also sucks, in a 10 ffa game 1 vs 9 ai, they also do the taunting. like they'll send in a single scout ship to a system with 16 bombers defending it plus i dunno 12 capital ships and the single scout will taunt me

Which takes the smart good ai, with fun taunts and intimidation, and throws it out the window and you realise its crap AI with no sense of tactics whatsoever.

I've yet to see a single properly co-ordinated full out attack on a single area i own. I've seena couple factions join up and attack me at the same time , but mostly they prioritise the planets they attack so its easy to learn where they'll go, and a large fleet of small ships scares off most fleets or destroys them, and a semi fast frigate fleet can cover 3-6 planets easily depending on the layout, 3 in a straight line leave them in the middle and jump them as needed. or 3 in a straight line and a couple north and south can be got to before the planet is taken.

i've yet, a single time to see a AI on hard/medium or low not waste his capital ships and yet to see it come down to a massive last planet battle. half way through the game will be the hardest fight and then if its a massive game of 10 players, you've got another 10 hours of boring smaller and smaller fights that are way easier as your capital ships level up and they have less and less to fight you with. i guess at some point i just want to come across the home planet and fight a full fleet of capital ships and a hundred frigates.

Also a touch miffed at the AI when your own ships just won't use abilities. capital ships and offensive abilities tends to be fine, but frigates/cruisers seem to so rarely use their abilities and individually choosing one of 50 cruisers one by one to use their ability is beyond ridiculous.

WHy on earth didn't they make a single player campaign. the game is desparately in need of one. a bit of real story, some nice scripting of events and making those last stand battles scripted is easy.

Not sure...

A better (but more time consuming) way might be for him to bring his PC to your house, hook it up to your connection, and download/activate the game.

Given the starforce protection wotsit I would be surprised if it were possible for him to get and install the game, purely from files on your PC, without any kind of online activation. I mean, what would be stopping him from just using your serial? If he never went online while playing there would be no way to verify. I think these are things that would be protected against when creating a downloadable application.

what you can do is archive the game from your stardock, copy the archive.

Install stardock on your mates pc, install Sins and he will be able to run it just not play online, i believe though he can add his own CD Key to his own account so he can then play online with his account but im not 100% sure try posting on the Sins forums there very helpful lot over there :).
