Sins of a solar empire - unusually low hardware requirements

Accoridng to the manual its all legit for you to have two copies of the game and play a lan with two players. It says it supports up to two players using the same serial number. Nice of them!

Anyone know if you can plan via a direct IP option? What ports need to be opened?

just on a related tangent, the manual does say you can play a two player lan game over a network with one cd key, which suggests they are happy for you to install it on multiple computers for simultaneous use...

^^beaten :p

Just started a 1v1 against a mate on a 50 planet 3 Star Map, going well so far colinised my whole system and started small raids on him, managed to destroy his cap fleet as he tried to take on the pirate system in his system epic fight, although i am now trapped in his territory with a few of my cap ships damaged :( and the rest of his fleet defending the sun.

Cant wait to continue it, still need to colinise the empy system :p. I can see this game lasting a while.

Anyone still playing this? Regretting buying it in the end. Borrowed a mates copy and we were playing it on a LAN and found it quite fun. Then bought it to play online and got used to it. Now find it really bad!! :(

The two main things that ruin it are the fleet upkeep cost thing and the planet destroying weapons that can fire across the whole map.

The games just a 2 hour build up to one large battle then the loser has to sit there until the other person has finished them off! You cant build up a fleet again as you have no money due to the fleet upkeep cost and by the time you try and make a large enough fleet to get back some land your planet is destroyed and thats game over! Even though youve just built up a fleet again!! I've found most people just quit after the first large battle as they know after that its impossible to win. Lame :(

And dont even get me started on the vasari and their free ships! Its close to cheating!

I never actually won a game and the reason is i cannot stand the frame rate dives when the coloured text appears... I made a thread about it , lots of people replied with the same issue and the devs finally found the cause to be fixed in patch 1.3.

Because it was such a problem i asked the devs for a hotfix so i can enjoy the game again , stardock was useless in their reply and the members snuffed me out because i whinged. Seems to me although stardock basically sell the game for them via that docking software they don't seem to have good contact with each other regarding bugs and problems

100,000 sold by second week...
...and It could have been higher
By Frogboy Posted February 29, 2008 16:55:39

2008-02-29_1649Sins of a Solar Empire has sold over 100,000 units in its first 2 weeks since launch! And as happy as we are about its great sales, the number of sales could have been even higher if we had had the stocking levels of say, a console game.

By this weekend, Sins of a Solar Empire should complete its retail availability in North America with Canadian stores picking up the title in considerable quantity (imagine the sales figures if its retail availability had started at this level). Sales this past week were actually higher than the week before (again, mainly because of increased availability).

The game has hit a perfect storm of good fortune. First, if we may be so bold, it's a really good game. Secondly, it merges two popular but underserved PC markets: PC strategy. Third, it's literally the only major new PC strategy game to come out recently or to be coming out for awhile. And most importantly, the game was designed so that it runs with great graphics quality on most existing PC systems without any upgrades needed.

We're (Ironclad/Stardock) currently doing QA on the Sins 1.03 update which has a significantly enhanced computer AI (it's giving me a challenge at the highest level), computer replacement of dropped players online, and AI surrendering to reduce "mop up". No ETA on release other than "soon". Once that's done, we'll have a demo version.

Thanks for all your support! We hope you're having as good a time playing the game as we are providing it!

as another bump, the retail copy is now available from a certain supermarket (online, not sure about in store) for a very reasonable price. i got a pull out tech tree, phat manual and keyboard thing!

we should try get an OCUK game on the go at some point for this. Although it will require a lot of time and probs a lot of saving lol :p

Mega bump. Anyone still playing?

Just reinstalled it from Impulse after I bought GalCiv2.

I feel like a comp stomp, anyone up for a game?

Just been messing around modding the cap ships, made my TEC race only able to build cap ships, and sent each one off to different corners of the galaxy. They were supped up and once at level 8 they were pretty much unstoppable against anything but the largets fleets.

Boring in the end but fun :) seeing one TEC battleship pounding away at enemy cap ships with their long range, fast firing hard hitting gauss cannons, decimating enemy strike craft with the flak bursts, and absorbing insane amounts of damage with the adaptive shields.

I also made the gauss cannon batteries in system much longer ranged and harder hitting but increased the tactical slot usage, having 8 of them around a planet holding off pirate invasions was fun, but had a massive task force enter my system, and the gauss cannons were overwhelmed, but not before holding them at bay long enough for 2 of my uber battleships to get back, where upon the enemy force was forced to retreat.

I've finally got around to installing this game, despite owning it for ~8 months, so far I've only lost one evening to it (been replaying Half-life), but it seems quite good.

Any tips for a novice?

Find the pirate base :) and plan your lines of defense from their probable approach locations. Also stationing a capital ship or two with some support where the pirates usually appear is a good way to get their experience up.
