Sirs - Spec some super socks, s'il vous plait

I absolutely agree with those saying quality is worth paying for. But I've still really struggled to get myself to pay £20+ for a pair of socks. Or even £10+ really!

My wife won’t pay the same as I do for socks, she buys cheap crap and has to throw them away when they wear out. She can’t comprehend that I’d pay £15 for a pair of socks that will last ten years but will happy pay £2 or £3 a pair and replace them every eighteen months or so.

Socks are bought as throwaway, consumable items but it works out cheaper in the long run to pay that bit more. Plus you get a much more comfortable pair of socks!

I happened to visit GoOutdoors today, so while I baulked at the Bridgedales, I have taken on the mention of liner socks above, and bought a 2 pack of Peter Storm Coolmax liners for just under a tenner. We'll see how I get on with them, and if they're good, I'll go back and empty their shelves. :D

I wimped out of the thick socks quest because there was just too much choice, and they were all loads of money.

I agree, I just wait until they're on offer or on sale. They last so long that you can legitimately wait and periodically check to see when they are. Asking for a specific set of socks at christmas is much better than getting a 2 bulk sets of rubbish from Tesco :D

As feek says, it's a false economy and you don't get the luxurious feel of a good pair of cosy/comfy socks.

You specifically requested 'super' socks! :p

I must admit, £25+ for a pair of socks seems like total madness to me, but I bought a pair from Amazon thinking I'd probably just send them back but knew as soon as I put them on my feet I was keeping them!

The lifetime guarantee helps ease the conscience a little bit. :p

I know, I know! I'm in total agreement - just suffering some kind of mental block. :D

As suggested by Reuben, I reckon I'll keep my eye out for sales to get me started. Actually did a similar thing with Just Wear boxers a year or so back, and struggle to willingly wear any of my other brand pairs now - so it does go to show.

And on the subject of paying for quality and lifetime guarantees - I did succumb to a Tilley hat while I was there. Nearly £50 (but they're £90 usually, so I could balance out the cost with the bargain element in my mind!)

Tilley hats are amazing, I’ve got one of their bucket hats that I wear hiking and fishing. So takes a bit of a beating and is still perfect.

Yeah, it’s surprisingly a great thing. That benefits everyone. Also saves wastes and is more eco too.

I don’t know about you but I use to get a t-shirt, bulk buy socks and boxers with a thrown shower gel kit. From everyone.

So after a couple of years of the same stuff, I now just say look rather than buying me the same **** I don’t need can you get me a pair of these socks. I do the same for technical tees, thermals etc or things I need for say fishing. People do think it’s insane to pay X about

I think generally people would rather buy you something they know you appreciate and will definitely use than struggle to think what to get you then just end up getting you the same thing they get every year.

My family was the same until a couple of years back when, rather than make it easy for them, I decided to put the word out that I was alright for socks and boxers for the next 20 years!

My next socks will be Bridgedale when these Danish Endurance wear out, for boxers it is now Under Armour as Danish Endurance boxers (both types not inc bamboo) are crap quality and went in the bin after very little use.

You tried the newer rebranded one as with most inc Levis 501 and adidas trainers the quality is not there as before?

.. was that aimed at me? If so....

... I'll let you know later, as I've just ordered some more from Millets. Their descriptions are a bit vague so I hope I've got the right ones.

They arrived, the rebranded ones and they don't seem any different to the older ones.
