Ski equipment

I don’t know the OPs circumstances to say whether it’s worth it over the essentials, a 12 year old novice skier doesn’t really need wicking base layers on a first ski holiday, it’s the whole point of layering to stop you sweating and they’re not likely to be hucking it off cliffs or hiking backcountry.

I disagree. Beginner lessons are often the physically hardest. You spend much more time picking yourself up, and use a lot of energy moving inefficiently. Meanwhile, the feeling of being wet and cold is a great way to ruin the fun of the experience.

Don't spend too much
Dare 2 be isn't a bad shout tbf! But why is she wearing a coat that's too small?

I thought instructors had moved away from teaching kids that age the snowplow to then unteach them it and teach them how to actually ski.

Could be: I wouldn't know. But I don't think that really changes things: I still think the early sessions are some of the physically toughest and thus the ones where you're going to sweat the most. I suppose you're also not going to have the long ski rides where the cold sets in so maybe it matters less that way but I'd still err on the side of proper base layers. Base layers are good for all sorts of things anyway so I don't think they're a waste of money.

But this is entirely the point of layers! Take a layer off.

I don't disagree about the value of wicking base layers, I love mine, but in terms of essential items they're down the list of things I can't live without. For a still growing 12 year old girl, they might get the use only once on this holiday so it comes down to whether Labrat is happy enough to spend a bit more money on that, I dunno if he's actually said what sort of budget he's willing to spend.

Edit:
Which also comes to mind, a small backpack!

Also bear in mind as a 12 year old girl the look is also going to be a factor

Something like these could get bonus parent points

other wicking uses like ... if you are being frugal with the heating, this winter,
and, if you don't have most breathable ski/other outer shell layer, moisture is held away, a cheaper solution, I use that, on a bike.

for the context of clothing expense. ... how much is a school ski trip.
