Skipped a red light by mistake.

oh, and to the O.P. don't worry about it, we've all skipped a red light by mistake once (or twice). and those who say they haven't, well they just never noticed ;)

Rob

Sorry, but that is just rubbish.

I've been driving 5 years which I admit isn't exactly a lifetime, but how you can condone saying skipping through a red light as an easy to make mistake is beyond me.

If you're not capable of seeing a red bulb lit up in your face, I dread to think what your awareness of objects harder to view such as motorcycles and pedestrians is like.

How anyone can play down skipping a red light as trivial is beyond me. It's not clever at all, in fact it's bloody stupid. If someone has skipped a light intentionally they really need to think about how much they value the life of them and others. If someone has skipped a light accidentally they need to think about ways to dramatically improve their awareness.

Way to go belittling driving through a red traffic light.

There are many irritating traffic laws, speed limits are one of these but red lights?
I'm honestly staggered that you totally missed the sarcasm in his post.

a friend of mine was telling me how last night he was int the middle of three lanes at a crossroads stopped at the lights, with a car to the left of him. a police car pulls up behind this other car (no blue lights or anything) the lights are still read and this guys just jumps the lights! obviously the blues come on and he pulls over straight away. so you see you coulda done a lot worse.

When and where was this? I was a passanger in my flat-mate's car when she did exactly this. Total blonde moment - don't know what she was thinking. One minute we're sitting there at the red light, next - for no reason - she pulls away. I'm in the process of asking her what the hell she's doing when the blue lights and siren go on behind us.

Lucky for her it was a male cop and she was extremely cute. Not sure I would have got away with a ticking off.

South London - must have been about around the end of 2000 or so.

Meant to add, don't think I've ever driven through a red light by mistake, but I have stopped at green lights for no apparent reason.

Um, iv had a heavy night out but im thinking he noticed the sarcasm and thought it was a bit silly playing down a red light skippidge, what if the bloke had turned to go down the other oposite way while the OP wasnt "concentrating". Yea, we all make mistakes, yea, iv probably done just as bad, but i dont play it down as nothing.

The OP obviously realises how serious it could have been and held his hands up to say he got it wrong. Cut him a bit of slack.

Potentially disasterous mistakes are made every day but 99% of the time nothing bad happens. At least the OP relaised he did something wrong - I get the impression most people on the road have no idea how close they came to causing carnage.

lol, some people in this thread need to look up the meaning of sarcasm :p

OK, you made a mistake we all do from time to time. Just dont go through red lights on purpose, that would make you a taxi driver :D

I didn't miss the sarcasm in his post at all, it's clear his true meaning, implied by his sarcasm, is that red traffic lights are no big deal.

I cannot agree with that.

I've almost been shunted a few times by people looking over their bonnet and no further and I have stopped for a red light. They obviously intended to carry on even though the light was on red. Very scary.

When I drove to London to see some friends (Kentish Town) I noticed virtually every crossing had a traffic light camera on. I have no problems with those.

Ok,

When I posted this, I was a little upset, not thinking totally straight but the fact I missed the red light was due to the way the workers had set the system up. I have no photographic evidence to support this, but they had a truck, with enough lights to light up the starship enterprise, with a large arrow pointing down. Then just as I passed this, I then noticed the red light.

It was a totally insane traffic system, and the road workers needed to get it sorted out, as it was in fact dangerous. The red light should have bee further forward, with a sign saying “wait here”. There was nothing of the sort to show traffic control. Totally ridiculous, I should have explained this when I made the post.

I also did miss the sarcasm at first, but now I know he was just saying – oh wow, one red light, big deal.

But at the same point I was upset that I’d ended up antagonising someone as I failed to see a red light due to a poor traffic set up, and that I never got the chance to say sorry or explain why I’d done it. And I was upset that my mum was in hospital.

Next time, I’ll make sure I record my journeys, and if I as much as even sneeze at the wheel, I’ll stop my car and throw my keys away. The video can then be used to prove I stopped to ensure I was of no more danger to any other road users.

You're right, I misread what you posted, my mistake, sorry.

That's the second time I've done that in as many days, I think my brain needs a service.

I would like to see more red light jump cameras and far more enforcement and less speeding ones... 1st time you get a warning then 2nd time a £30 fine and if there is a 3rd time £100 fine and 3 points... after that a court apperance... IDIOTS!!!

First time you get 3 points and a fine so why would you want the laws to be made more lenient?

Not quite, skipping traffic lights isn't something to take lightly, however my point was that the OP obviously did it by mistake, but seems to think that he had done something atrocious and he should be reconsidering whether he is fit to drive, we all make mistakes, he shouldn't get hung up about it, he made a mistake whilst driving, something we have all done time to time, and knows it.

It depends on the traffic lights in question. On a blind junction I agree entirely. On open crossroads when you can see good distance down all roads than how are you endangering anyones life?
