IF I were to upgrade, whats your suggestions? money is very tight, so no new PSU, mobo or ram

spec at the moment :

AMD 3000+ Venice
DFI Lanparty UT Ultra-D
HIS Radeon X1950 PRO (PCIe)
Geil 2Gb RAM
Akasa 460W

thinking about getting one of those X2 chiips with the higher cache?

If money's tight the 4200+ X2 would be the one to go for! £105 at OCUK

The chips tend to clock very well from what i've seen and will compete with the 4800's fairly well despite having half the L2 cache.

I have a 3800 that i run at 2.5ghz (250fsb with a 10x multi) and it's very effective. Incidentally, i went from a 3700+ @ 2.6ghz and it's a much more powerful and effective beast.

The 4200 offers an 11x multi so with one of those i'm sure i could happily run it in my system @ 2.75ghz.

You could use the cash you save on a tuniq tower, scythe ninja or something similar! ;)

whats that?

oh and i dont think i could "overclock" due to the RAM being cheap Geil Value and only a 460W, the heatsink cost me an arm and a leg, but its only a 120mm Zalman cooler

He was suggesting other CPU coolers but if you already have a decent one, you don't need to worry about that. Even value RAM will overclock a little bit and even if it doesn't, you can run it on a 166 divider so that it's not being overclocked but your CPU is :)

That's right! Just thought that as you'd not listed a decent cooler i'd assume you didn't have one! Then you could happily clock the X2 without it overheating (the standard AMD coolers aren't that special!).

You really should overclock it when you get it! DFI mobo's love overclocking and like El Jimben says with a divider on the ram you can keep it at it's normal operating speed whilst clocking the nadgers off the X2! ;)

Divide the ram down and get clocking! your ultra d will do 300htt easy, so you could get 2.7 out of the 300 you have

2.7 would be cracking! :)

im a bit limited in psu and RAM arent I?

4800+ X2, go for that one, 1mb cache on each core i believe

virtually no difference between the 512k and 1mb caches, athlons don't really care much about cache :)

not at all ram doesnt matter, just use an appropriate divider to keep it at 200mhz (or there abouts)

My 3000 did 2.80 (350x8) with 1.75v as a suicide shot, and 2.65 with 1.44v 24/7

an peer of mine claims he has his X2 65nm to 3.35Ghz, is that any good? only he doesn't have the internet for some bogus reason so he can't check if its good :D

I'd go for an Opteron 165 with that mobo. Most reach 2.7 to 2.8GHz (mine doe 2.9 on default volts), and they can be had for around 100quid new.

I never understood the differences between the FX chips and X2 chips ?

Opterons are just sandard cut down like Celerons arent they?

Opteron's are server-class, or cherry picked Athlon64's if you want another way to put it. That's why they tend to overclock better than ' normal ' Athlon64 / X2 chips.

Semprons are the AMD equivilant of Celerons.

ok, so are Opterons dual core as well ? (i dont think they are) if they are not then im looking at a dual core chip as i do a lot of multi tasking as well as games

Opteron 165 and up are dual core. I have one going on the MM tonight that I have been running at 2.7ghz no problems, could probably go faster but it was fast enough for me so I didnt try for any more.

There's single core and dual core flavours. If you want dual core, look for a 165, 170, 175, 180 or 185, all have 1MB cache and stock speeds are 1.8-2.6GHz in 200MHz intervals.
