Just wondering if its at all possible?

I've been reading a lot about Billion 7800N routers having a firmware version that allows you to connect to Sky's network without issues.

So i'm wondering if its worth it? I have the Sagem router, so i have no idea if thats crap or not.

Just hoping for some feedback.

Thanks.

Yes - and just to quote a very recent post I made on another thread here..

As for the comment re Sky ADSL usernames/passwords, there is a handy online tool to help you 'extract' this information from your current router. I use my own Netgear DG834GT (syncs 2.5mb higher!) over the worthless piece of crap that Sky provided me with.

Yup, I've been using a 2Wire router via the above method for several years without any difficulty.

I'm fairly sure it's against Sky's terms of service, but I've never heard of anybody being told off for doing it.

It is against their ToS, but iv spoken to enough of their tech guys to find out that all they care about is that the sky router is plugged in if you ever call them about an issue, apart from that they really could'nt care what you use lol.

So just keep the sky router somewhere nice and safe, incase u need to call them at any time.

So, a different router would def speed things up a bit?

No idea. sky sent me a router, I just entered its MAC etc. into the site & entered the user/password into my 7800N. my last re-sync was after 67 days when Openreach dug up the cable to the local cabinet.

Not really, I could buy a pet hamster that could route and direct traffic quicker than the junk Sky send.. :D

I have quite a long line (54dB line attenuation on ADSL2+) and the Sky router synced at 2.5Mb. Using my own Netgear router I sync at 5Mb. ;)

if you sign up now you'll probably get the new Sky Hub which, from what I've read is actually pretty good. The only downside is no Gigabit LAN. other than that it's been pretty good from what i've heard.

Also as has been said, whilst technically it is against Sky's T's and C's they won't care if you get it working but won't provide any help to get it working. other than that keep the Sky Router handy. Why not try it and see how you go? Save buying one if it does the job?!

Well i'm currently going thorough the period where the line settles down, so my speeds are improving.

Routerstats reports my line up to 12mb. Which is what the estimated the line to be. But BT estimated 17mb, so i'm expecting a lot more.

I think regardless i'm getting the Billion 7800N after the settling period, just for the SNR tweaks and improved wireless signal.

I signed up last week and got the Sagemcom F@ST2504n . No idea if thats the new one or not, but it still crap, the settings are all hidden so i can't for example change the DNS unless i telnet into it.

Yes that is the 'older' router as I received the same one when I signed up with Sky over 2 years ago.

Why on Earth do Sky force you to use their (poor) router anyway, seems a stupid idea to me. If they enable any decent layer 2 authentication in the future then it would make me not want to use them as an ISP. I hope that they keep it how it is so I can switch when my BT contract is up.
