Hi,
Im looking to change over to Sky TV as its going to be cheaper. So im wondering i will be getting free broadband. Im currently on 10MB telewest which is good. Although its been disconnecting a lot past few days. Will this become like tisacli or even worse becuase its free and its download speed. Im not sure how far away from the exchange i am. Im in the DY1 area. I will be happy aslong as i get 10mb or more. Also i do a lot of downloading and online gaming. Do they port throttle. Does'nt matter at night from 12AM. What are pings like ?.. do they include a router or will i need to go and buy a wireless one ?.

Thanks.

EDIT : DSL Zone UK says im 1.46 kilometres from the exchange is that good ?

if you do game dont even think about it. they switch interleaving on and will not turn it off which means higher ping times. still waiting for it to be taken off my line

well ping on my line is constant around 35, all in all my service with them has been awsome. connected exactly when they said and reliable service no downtime what so ever.

So if i was to ring them up and ask for them to leave intervealing off before they connect me will they do it ?

Have you checked with somewhere like samknows to see if sky have even upgraded your exhange for there service, if not you go through bt and will get upto 8 meg but will cost your more, last email i had was £19.99 with 40 meg cap.

40 meg cap, as in monthly? You do mean gig, right?

nope been there done that got the t-shirt so to speak. they say that gaming is not a technical reason for turning off interleaving

tbh, if you have a good line with a good ISP, you should be fine EVEN with Interleaving. It DOES increase pings, but I have interleaving on, and can still cmd prompt ping www.jolt.co.uk for pings of around 21/23ms, with it on.

If you have a good connection, and ISP, interleaving will only cause a small hit. 30-40ms is more than cope-able ping for even the most diehard cs fanatics unless they're being pedantic.

What would be a giood reason for them to turn it off ?, say i work for a big company which uses VPN software and i wont be able to connect to other pcs with interleaving on ?

Doubt that'll work, Interleaving just changes the method data is sent slightly, increasing the ping, as it takes slightly longer for individual data packets to be recieved at the other end as they have to be pieced together. Thats my understanding anyway.

I have had Sky BB for about 3 months and it has been faultless all the way. As for gaming my pings are between 20-30ms using British servers. Previously I had 10-15ms pings with Eclipse using fastpath, however it use to disconnect 3 or 4 times an hour.

All in all I am extremely pleased with Sky, for just a fiver a month I have a reliable, stable and fast connection.

I would highly recommend it.

i would recomend it, constant strong connection. min speed that I can remember is 11Mb average out at 12.5Mb, on a good day I can get 13Mb. Only problem I had like most other I no is the migration from another ISP, I think I had 2 weeks down time which isn't that bad as I have known people be down for a lot longer.

It takes longer if your with another ADSL ISP ?..... Im on blueyonder atm :).

I was with AOHELL, someone who works where my dad did went from AOL to sky and they were without connection for 4 weeks, but I think that the fault was down to BT not doing their job on the line

Not necessarily - slow migrations are largely only because Sky couldn't organise a you-know-what in a brewery.

You'd need to order and get a BT line before you could even begin to wait for Sky to do their part.
