Sky FTTP VPN Issues

If you have a broken connection right now can you tracert to a destination and see where it stops?

I didn't think to do a tracert tonight actually. It's all working again currently although I'm going to try and break it again shortly after reading about re-enabling the Broadband Shield then disable it again after an hour, as apparently it can still stay enabled even when it's been disabled. Not too hopefuly it will fix anything but the hour will be up soon and I'll try it.

I did do a few ping tests though:

Hey andy_mk3 !

Sorry to resurrect such an old thread but wondering if you have had any joy? I have almost identical issues as you except that if I download NOT on VPN, the exact issue you report occurs.

I've tried 3 different routers (Unifi UDM, Firewalla Purple, Mikrotik RB5009) and the issue can be reliably recreated but when using the Sky Hub, it works absolutely fine and, to be honest, it's driving me up the wall with your post being the first I can find that describes the issue perfectly.

Appreciate this is a long shot but, had to ask!

No joy I’m afraid no. I have 5 months left of my Sky contract and I’ll be waving goodbye to them as soon as I can.

I’ll I’ve been able to do is limit download speeds to avoid any issues. Quite frustrating!

In some respects I’m glad I’m not the only one but that’s not too helpful to either of us

No worries, knew it would be a long shot!

I also limited download speeds and it didn't appear to make a difference - might try downloading via VPN just for the bants of it! Makes me think the Hub is doing something or has some weird setting that isn't obvious.

Really appreciate you replying so quickly and agreed, "at least" someone else is in the same boat - made me think I forgot how to IT!

Strange how yours is fine when using the Sky Hun though. Mine absolutely does not.

I switched to OPNsense recently and upgraded a couple of bits as well as a few configuration changes. I tested it again out of interest. Downloading a ~120gb file from usenet, this was without vpn and no speed restriction, after around 35gb downloaded the speed came crashing down so i stopped it before it ruined my connection completely. Really weird situation.

Ah, that's interesting yours doesn't work on the Hub either. pfsense/OPNsense was going to be one of the tests but given I've gone through 3 other routers than the Hub, I'm not holding out hope.

Wondering if it could be the switches I have (TP-Link Omada switches) but beginning to just think it's Sky - waiting for Cityfibre to finish in my area and hoping their network infrastructure will be better than Sky's!

Undocumented traffic shaping. :D

Are you doing it using an SSL connection to the Usenet server?

FWIW I get full speed with Aquiss to both Usenet as well as a private tracker using a SOCKS5 proxy.

I'm with Sky (fttp 500mb) and I get this when downloading from SSL Usenet. If I rate limit to a few mbps below max then it's fine. Let it rip at full pipe and then the line just drops and DNS gets blackholed.

Rather annoying and I'll probably leave them once my contract is up.

I want to close this thread off with a final outcome. Just over a week ago I changed ISP from Sky to Aquiss, I simply changed my (OPNsense) router from WAN DCHP to PPPoE for the new connection, nothing else has changed whatsoever, and after a week of hammering it (over 2TB in bandwidth) I have not encountered a single issue or slowdown.

I cannot explain what was going on with Sky, I'm not entirely sure it's an intentional think from them, maybe an issue with their setup somewhere along the line, who knows. But alas I finally do know it was indeed the ISP causing the problem. I do find it strange how few people are reporting this problem as I'm sure I cannot be the only one using the connection like I was, but there are a handful of others that have complained about it.

Sure is good being able to use my connection at full tilt without having to worry about it bringing the internet to a halt, which as anyone will know, has a very poor WAF.

What's the reason for wanting CF, the symmetrical link?
Yup, 100 Mbps is fine but I'd love more, I WFH and often move large files about, plus cloud backups etc. I also conduct demos from my lab which involves migrating VMs to the cloud, they'd be a bit more real life with faster upload. Just nice to have the extra oomph.

For those still on Sky with VPN issues, have you tried checking your external IP before you connect your VPN and then again as you start having issues?

Looking at the load balancer logs for our corporate website, we see most Sky accesses seem to be from the same, small-ish block of IP addresses, and I'm starting to think maybe they do some kind of NATing for all their customers. Could it be they're shifting you to another NAT address mid-way through your VPN session and that is messing everything up?

It's interesting to see all the problems with various ISPs, cross them off my list of potential providers, and realise there really aren't that many options if you want a quality connection in the UK.
