SKY internet dropouts

...it needs to support Sky's MER

I know you are only repeating what you have read, but it’s DHCP 60/61, not MER. Yes even Sky refer to it as MER on the Sky Hub status page, but they are also technically wrong.

Ok guys, strange...

I managed to get my sky setup through the TaoTronics only, disabled WiFi on the modem, when I done this, booted up my Xbox and double Nat was back

I then done “test Nat type” and once completed its back to wired and on Nat type, open.

You get double NAT because you have the mesh doing NAT as well as the router, the router won't not do NAT, presumably you've configured the router to, which is why you have double NAT.

So far you've purchased a 3 node set-up that can't act as a router with your chosen ISP and now ordered a router that won't work with Q mini's, when in all likelihood all you actually needed was a free booster from Sky. Buying things when you have no clue what the implications are generally ends up being expensive and generating other issues. Cabling Xbox to a node still means that connection has to go via wireless back to the primary node (unless it has a dedicated wired backhaul as well, in which case why not just use a switch in the first place?

1. Can you run a cable here or not? If so do it.
2. Have you asked Sky for a booster?
3. If you insist on keeping your new mesh system, you need to set it up properly, not in router mode or you will get double NAT.

Whatever you do, please stop randomly buying things without doing any reading up, you're creating more issues than you're solving and spending money for the sake of it without any real benefit.

Yes I know, I just refer to it as MER as it's what most people know or understand about it. Same when everyone calls it an 'ethernet' cable whereas technically it is not, it's unshielded twisted pair, ethernet being the protocol.

yeah, your right. I have also decided to go Ethernet, as much as a pain that it will be initially..

I ran a cable across the rooms to see how it stacked up. But the latency is through the roof for some reason?

I used to have random drop outs like you mention in your first post when I was with sky and used my sky hub for wifi. I disabled the wifi and installed a dedicated wifi AP (ubiquiti nanohd) which resolved all my issues. I think the Sky hub was getting too hot, it always felt really hot with wifi enabled.

thanks, will keep an eye on it. Speeds / latency settled down so is ok for now.

watch this space though! Lol!!

The short term pain is offset by not having to spend a fortune and it being capable of gigabit and beyond. Latency can have a number of causes, for example something else using the local connection, ISP network issues or the remote test servers being busy etc. but if it’s all working, then you’re all good. You can always put a switch on the end of the cable and connect the mini to it as well.

yeah, your right, saved a butt load doing this way. The latency has come down, sitting around 30 ish for the most part.

I have a 5 port switch funnily enough, so it would connect to the mini? Even though it’s not Ethernet cabled up to the main sky Q box in the other room?

Well..back to square one..

on the iPad and downloading a game on the series x and...both dropped out!

On the phone to sky right now in a queue..

Does your sky hub feel hot to the touch? Mine used to feel REALLY warm until I disabled the built in wifi. My plusnet router also feels cool to the touch (also wifi disabled, but helped by the fact it has feet that allow it to stand vertically).

not too hot to the touch.

just off the line with sky. The line has been tested and ok, but they also use some sort of “intermittences” line that is showing complete drop outs.

Plus with the iPad and Xbox etc dropping out simultaneously it has influenced the case to be a problem elsewhere..

engineer booked for the 12th, so hopefully can fix, and with this COVID, all the new rules has been a PITA, but hey, whatever it takes to be safe though!

Read the whole thread, but it's unclear whether it's the DSL connection that's dropping out or the wi-fi. Which is it, as they are completely different issues? Can you go into the router settings and look at the uptime for the DSL connection?

It’s dropping on the WiFi and the Ethernet, I’m not to sure if sky router can be accessed like that can it?

I might be barking up the wrong tree then. Hopefully the sky engineer can diagnose the issue.

sorry mate, not meant to be too blunt there, but even in use it was only warm at best.

Well..not a good start..

no engineer showed up between 1-3 like supposedly meant too..

phoned sky about this, and..no engineer was booked!

so now it’s earliest appointment is next Tuesday, not impressed at all.
