I have Sky+ at the minute and use it all the time to record programs etc. I love the ease of use and the way you can set series links etc.

I already have broadband and telephone with Virgin media and I have been offered a really good deal for their V+ package which gives me more features for an overall lower monthly bill than I'm paying using Sky and Virgin.

I need to know how the service compares to using Sky+ and if any of the features are better or worse with either one... does anyone use V+? If so, what do you think?

Well, I've not used Sky+ but my mate has it, and he loves my V+ box. Loads and loads of on demand stuff. HD movies. Catch-up TV and 3 tuners (record 2 progs and watch another)

Only negative is the gui is a little sluggish. I can live with that.

Excellent stuff. I don't really think I will miss Sky One tbh, but are there any other decent chanells missing?

Sky+ is a better service but if it's worth it depends on the price difference. I would call Sky+ and see if they can match Virgins offer. Be prepared to be sold Sky phone and Sky BB though. In this case, if it's something you dont want ( I have Sky TV and Virgin BB myself) then just get them off your case by saing there is no BT line to your house.

In what way is Sky+ a better service though? I need to know all the facts before making a decision.

Sky just has more channels than Virgin. If you don't need all the channels, then go with Virgin. I prefer the selection that Sky has so i have been with them for years.

VM is terrible, not only is it missing a lot of channels, but naviating through menus etc and stuff like that is just so sluggish and crap, where sky is pretty much instant on most things.

Sky+ is awesome, and a revolution in TV. V+ i havent tried, but i'm sceptical its anybetter than sky+ (in terms of system technologies, 3 tuner thing aside).

Channels depend on what you want to watch

i find the virgin + box terrible

the channel organisations are weired (eg UKTV Gold i say channel 100 and UKTV Gold + 1 is like channel 800)

the menus are slow and unresponsive, and i dont find it a joy to use at all, its painfull. i had one for a while, but got rid and went back to sky

best thing you can do, is find a mate with each and have a play :) failing that, find a mate with a V box, and have a play with sky at currys / dixons. they nearly always have a sky + demo box in the shop.

I have Sky+ already and I don't have any mates with V+. I might get it anyway as you get a 30 money back guarantee if you dont like it - I will keep Sky+ for that month also before making my mind up.

Cheers for your help all :)

Coming from Sky+, V+ will definately feel slow and sluggish to use. Channel layout is poor.

I would call Sky and negotiate a cheaper price instead. It's not that hard to get them to drop it down a bit.

i have sky+ at dads and v+ at mums, and i can tell you now v+ is much much much better then sky+ purely because of its free on demand service. The way they offer you the ability to watch a lot of great programs up to a week after they are shown on tv, you can watch them anytime you want as many times as you want, pause, rewind etc whilst still recording other programs, afaik sky+ offer no such serivce. V+ also provide free ondemand stuff for longer then a week, like whole series of stuff to watch for ages.

i actually never watch live tv anymore as there is always enough to watch ondemand in the week and if not record other stuff keeps me going for ages.

i thought the only channels v+ don't have are a few of skys which tbh for me atleast isn't at all a lose but then this is personal choice but for what tjhey offer instead is amazing.

for me atleast there only one choice and thats v+, the ui is sluggish at times but once you know what your doing hardly ever does it slow you down.

ah another great geature of v+, the ability to watch tv whilst browsing the tv guide, very annoying that sky doesn't do this as virgin have for years now and its great being able to check something liike when a program starts but not have to loose any of your program to do it.

The epg on the V+ boxes are terrible though, got Sky HD myself altough I barly ever use it, the epg is so much quicker than the V+ boxes are.

Could never use one.

The ability to watch tv whilst browsing is coming the the pvr sky+ boxes in February.

sorry but no

dont care how much stuff there is to watch on the "on demand" service, its only whats available at some point in the scheduling. It sometimes get lucky and lets you watch something you may have missed or not noticed in the schedule

but that in no way makes up for the shoddy EPG and confusing layout as other users have agreed with me on.

and sky have a decent ammount of on demand content anyway.

you dont need it. You press the status button to see whats on know, and can use the up/down arrows to cycle through the other channels.

To shorten the process, just set all the channels that you watch to favourites. Then use the blue button to cycle through them. Never once have i felt the need for an EPG and the TV on at the same time.

Actually Sky+ has 'Anytime TV' which is their own On Demand service. There isn't much on it at the minute, but its only really kicked off.

I ordered the V+ box today. I will try it along side Sky+ for a few weeks and if I dont like it I will send it back ;) Sorted.

good choice, i think you will like it but of course im going to say that as i prefer it. Post back with what you decide in the end.

sorry but no

what do you mean no? im stating my opinion that the free on demand is great and you say no. So like for me like say 40% of what they offer i'd watch if i had the time, isn't that a great feature about v+. As this is down to opinion the op should do what he is doing and testing it, if he doesn't find anything good send it back.

I don't? thanks for letting me know i don't need that, always good to know that you know whats best for me.

so it's not possible that one day someone might be say watching a tv program, but then remembers a program they saw advertised that they say want to record or watch but don't know what channel it's on so needs to view the tv guide whilst watching tv?

it's not like the feature is an addition which you need to pay for, it comes as part of the standard package with virgin so surely this is a good thing about virgin which is better then sky, although sky has an alternative which virgin also have, virgin beats sky on this, correct?

With sky a lot of programs now have a very useful function which is press green when the show is advertised and it adds it to the planner for recording!
