After realising my mam is getting royally shafted by virgin ive been looking into what prices are for new customers etc...
at the moment we're paying about £60 for internet phone and tv with virgin on a standard tv box.
Ive looked on both website to see what we could get as a new customer

virgin are offering
10mb broadband, XL tv package and phone for £49.45p/m and a V+ box for a one off fee of £49

sky are offering
Sky+ all the channels except movies and sports, 10mb broadband, free evening and weekend calls for £37.75p/m inc BT line rental and £79 set up fee.

what are your thoughts on virgin and sky? whos better? what are you paying? what would you do if you were me?

thanks :)

For those who can have both its nice to have the choice but for me it was only sky and I recently went for the SkyMAX broadband (up to 16 Mb/s if you live next door to the exchange but usually 10), telephone and sky TV with sport for around £57 a month.

Don't virgin offer mobile phone deals as well if you need them and its broadband is fibre so you can get upto 50 mb/s if you want it. So I guess its what you want it all for to make the decision. What are you dads needs ?

i'm with virgin on the VIP package and pay £85/month, but only because the broadband is (arguably) better, plus HD content is free (except on demand movies), there are 4 or 5 hd channels now, including ESPN, which again you get free with the XL tv package with virgin.

I've considered moving back to sky time and time again but i haven't bothered, and as long as we keep getting new HD content i'll stay with virgin.

My only gripe with virgin is the menu system on the V+ box is slow.

I have XL BB (20Mb solid), XL TV, L phone and a v+ box which was £30 and i also have a STB in the bedroom and I pay £50pm

The sky broadband is up to 10mb so I'd check to see what you would actually acheive on your phone line. For me I only get 2Mb due to line distance so moving to virgin media and getting a solid 20Mb was the best option

20mb virgin + their lowest tv package, like £40 pm

I'm getting ripped off, I need to phone and complain

lol I'm paying 45 for all channels, 50mb bb and a telephone line ;) gotta love discount.

but you say you get 10mb to sky - do you actually see those speeds though? when I speed test with virgin, I get 48mbps. I downloaded a movie from apple the other day at 24mbs. amazing.

Holy cow, how did you do that? You been a customer for a long time?

I pay £44 for XL TV, 10Mb BB and a phone line. Only about 6 months in to my contract but at the end will look for some form of BB upgrade.

Im on 10mb broadband, xl tv and phone package and it coats about £50. Im thinking of ditching the tv and just using a. Freeview digibox, as i dont watch that much tv. Seems like virign offer you fantastic prices if your new. But if you,ve been with them since cable and wireless days you just get high prices

I had the same problem a few days ago, my new flat has both a sky dish and cable connection. I have been a VM customer for a year and currently pay £46 a month with a paper bill, thats for 10meg BB, XL TV with V+ and m level phone thats free at weekends. After giving them a call about moving and perhaps leaving for sky they gave me an offer of £25 a month for 3 months then £35 after that. It seems at anytime with virgin you can take advantage of any new customer deals as long as you ask and and take out another 12 months contract.

I had no choice between Sky and Virgin unfortunately due to the area I live in, but given the choice I would have gone for Virgin with a combined broadband package!

How do sky + and v+ compare?

are they comparable? (sp)

Sky + is far superior, I hate the laggy feel of the V+ box. Although having said that there are some features on V+ (that escape me at the moment) that are nice and would make Sky + an awesome package.

Before I moved out the flat I was with Sky, and for £35 a month I was getting Sky plus evening and weekend calls plus 13Mbps downstream, that was including line rental...

as someone who has had both i'll chip in

The V+ box remains the property of virgin the £49 is simply the installation price. the V+ box is also dog slow and ****. There is also hardly any hd content on Virgin. However the broadband is good.

I have Sky HD and all the channels and i pay £55 a month. Well worth loads of HD content and the box is leagues ahead of V+ and i own it

go with sky imo

woot first post ever!

i moved house recently. in my old house i was getting 20 meg BB only for £37 per month. In my new gaff im getting 20 meg BB and a phone line with free land line calls for £31 a month. It also comes with the base TV package which is free if you get a phone line.

edit: i was under the impression owning the box isnt all good since once the warranty is out you are responsible for the maintenance of it? and worse having to pay in full for any replacements? im not sure how it works.
