Wrong. I had a Virgin media set top box that went down. They tried to charge me £30 for a new one because it was one of their old ones. That was the final straw, they said they would be charging £30 to my debit card. I said no you arnt and cut off the direct debit to them

I've never heard of a legitimate charge to fix a broken box unless it was user breakage/fault (IE someones replaced the cabling with their own to extend it and it's caused a fault that required a call out).

I don't think it's been the policy in the 9 years i've been with them.

About the only other reason might be if you were on analogue and they thought you wanted a digital box (back before they made the change over FOC).
