*** Sky Q Thread ***

There used to be - MTV Live HD. It wasnt 24/7 HD but the HD content they did have was substantially better at times.... But that was dropped. The picture quality on the music channels i couldnt care less about, really, but it bugs me that the audio quality is so terrible at times. There's absolutely no need for it at all, hQ audio uses no bandwidth at all compared to video.

I am also still surprised that there is not a single HD music channel. They are all still SD and look and sound terrible.
Incredible isn't it... the world's 4k YET we're so still in the dark ages where for the first time and been like this for what 5 plus years now, home tech is ahead of the sources that we're watching and the infrastructure to a certain extent now... I mean to have streaming services and SKY etc not having high def sound is mental as well... and that's probably not gonna change.

exactly and it infuriates me, we're just clogging the system up with what is imho crap. It's a shame as a 19 year user of Sky, if they sorted the crap sound and picture then it'd be fine... but in this day and age now, they need to move with the times and the costs of cost are just mental!!!
Those channels pay for bandwidth and channel listings. And there are still around 400K Sky+ and 250k digiboxes out there that Sky haven’t been able to replace with around 100k single digiboxes still on active accounts. Sky have offered free boxes and upgrades to get rid of these but many belong to the elderly or handicapped people or people use screen reader software which doesn’t work with even HD boxes. These are primarily why the +1 channels are still there. There are also still quite a few digiboxes in use in businesses too.

Anyone suffered from audio dropouts on the newer boxes?

Something that seems to be a talking point on the sky forums
Randomly I've had both sound and picture separately.

The first time I noticed it was with a picture but no sound, this happened a few times, usually when turning the box on.

The second time the picture was still there but as though it was paused, sound carried on as normal, it was on in the background and so I didn't think much of it when the sound was still on and I wasn't looking at the screen.

Yep. On my 2TB V3 box. It's very random - occasional split second sound dropouts on playback of recorded or downloaded content. VERY annoying. Interestingly it seems to disappear if you disconnect the box from the internet...

A Sky engineer came for something unrelated recently and he said there’s been issues with the WiFi on some boxes and recommended disabling the 2.4ghz through the SKY service menu, and 5ghz too if you’re using Ethernet. Supposedly it can ‘interfere’. Don’t ask me why!

I've done that since I've owned the box - switched off both frequencies of WiFi from the service menu and only ever used ethernet. Doesn't make a blind bit of difference to the sound drop-outs. The only way to get rid of them it seems is to take the ethernet cable out the back of the box - not exactly an ideal solution!

Are these dropouts on the minis?

We had our box replaced after having similar issues. That + making sure there is plenty of disk space left solved the issue for us.

I don't have any minis, just the main 2TB Q box, which has over 95% free disk space. Some people on the Sky Community forums have reported the issue occurring on the mini boxes too. Was your replacement box a V3? The V1 and V2 boxes seem less susceptible to the drop-outs.

Yeah, they replaced it with a V3. Have you had an engineer out?

Not with this box, no, I already had to replace a dodgy V2 box which had a VERY loud hard drive. The engineer who brought that was utterly useless. He had never heard of HDR for starters. I've done a courier swap of another dodgy box so I may do that again to see if I get a better one.
Out of interest, how quiet is your V3? Does the fan run quietly all the time, even when the box is in standby? It does on mine and seems utterly stupid. I wish you could turn off instant rewind on the Q boxes, like you could do on the +HD boxes, as I never use it and it just seems to put needless wear on the hard drive.

I actually don't notice the noise really - it's in an area of the house where to be honest we don't spend much time. We watch on the minis 99% of the time.

I have noticed (probably unrelated) recently that rewind/FF has a mind of its own. It'll skip from 1m to 9m in a second then refuse to go back again. Very frustrating.

Sorry to jump in but wanted to ask Misschief a question.
To do with HDR and mini boxes. I have a 2GB UHD box (32BO63) which does not have HDR. According to the sky site I can 'upgrade' to an HDR capable box from within the shop in MY ACCOUNT no mention of any fees. When I try to do it they want to charge £50. Also now to the mini box, apparently when I took the package I have I should have received one free mini box, I did not, so I tried to order one on the site and again they want £50. Can you confirm please if I should have received 1 free mini box with my UHD package, I am paying for multiscreen which doesn't sit right with no mini box. Also as both 2GB UHD boxes and mini boxes are loaned to customers why are they trying to charge me £50 for each item? Would be grateful for any info before I have to go on the dreaded phone to Sky. Thanks.

TBH I'm not really sure, there have been offers of a free Mini box with the UHD package and if you're paying for 'Sky Q Experience' to watch in UHD then you should have been offered a Mini box also. I've been away from the DOmestic side for over a year now though.

If you’re paying for multiscreen then you absolutely should have been offered at least one mini box for free. Give them a ring about that. As for getting an HDR compatible box, technically yes, it should cost you £50 as an upgrade fee. Alternatively, what some people have done is find that their current box has developed a fault, purely by coincidence, and get it swapped for free. You can report your faulty box on the Sky website & get a new one couriered to you to swap yourself without need for an engineer. No guarantee it’ll be an HDR compatible one, but the chances are high.

OK, phoned Sky, no free mini box and no free HDR enabled 2TB UHD box. As for multiscreen, I no longer have to pay the stupid £14pm (no rebate). Unbelievable, was paying £160 per year for multiscreen, now paying zero, no free mini-box at £50. That's real good business by Sky!! Remembering why i left sky for virgin now, get two full size boxes from virgin with no extra charge. Dammit, see out contract and back to Virgin I go.

Sky really are a bunch of crooks. No consistency to anything they do, be it their pricing, their hardware or their customer service. I'm the same as you - seeing out my contract then ditching them for good after nearly 20 years as a customer.
