*** Sky Q Thread ***

I'm tempted by Sky Q, except I expect it will mean needing to add the sport package to be able to watch F1 (I currently get F1 for free with the "legacy" HD package) and I'm reluctant to pay even more to Sky to watch F1 when I don't watch any other sports on Sky.

The other fly in the ointment is that Sky refuse work on my dish due to the location. Does anyone know if independent installers will be able to install Sky Q?

I'm sure the legacy package transfers over

I had the legacy F1 deal, and it transferred over to Q.

Also, sky originally refused to work on my dish as it was installed on a chimney, but the two installers that turned up were quite happy to work on it, the only caveat being they needed to drill a hole in the wall to secure the ladders.

Now that's very interesting. One of the main reasons i have never changed my HD package is because the only sport i watch and want to watch is the F1. If sky are going to carry over F1 onto SkyQ without the need to buy Sky Sports as well, then that may well make me think again about moving to SkyQ. Are you 100% certain that F1 is available ? I ask because unless you have selected it and watched it, you wouldn't know for sure because it would still show in the EPG anyway.

Edit: Can you also confirm that HD content is 1080P and not 1080i ?

Legacy HD Pack does carry over.

Content is still served to the box via satellite in 1080i then can be up scaled by the box to 1080p. My LG 4k TV much prefers the up scaled 1080p.

1080i doesn't get upscaled to 1080p ;)

also you should never ever let the box do anything. let it output at native and let your tv do the upscaling if you have a decent tv. if your tv is crap then let the box do the scaling.

Nope HDTV is still 1080i. I've been able to select 1080p on my Virgin boxes for years it's just the box's output.

As said I would output 1080i.

I assumed they're now sending through in 1080P hence the option now in the boxes?

nope.

always select the native signal. the box will be adding stuff which isn't supposed to be there. let your tv or AVR do the conversion for you if you have a decent setup.

if you have a crap 1080p tv like a £300 50" polaroid then by all means let the box do it.

Right I need to clarify something here, because my understanding is there's no true quality difference in 1080i or 1080P, only what the eye perceives. However feel free to correct me lol

i.e. 1080i is simply just an interlaced picture of that's display twice e.g. odd and even scan lines so the actual resolution is still 1920x1080.... the only difference is progressive scan is drawn line after line I believe...

So the only difference to the above is the fact that we interlace one and we progressivly scan the other... all the information is the same, BUT to the NAKED EYE we perceive that difference. There's absolutely zero difference in quality as in bandwidth therefore I don't see SKY adding anything to the picture, it's simply how it's going to output the picture to your display. I suppose the processing of the output image is within the Sky box, but who says that this isn't as good as anything later on down the line? There's nothing ADDED to any picture as in information though surely?!

All academic in a way as I've not seen a single SkyHD channel actually output at 1920x1080 anyway, it's always some weird cut down resolution with crap bandwidth anyway... however... just wanted to make a point.

1920x1080p24, lets forget that as Sky can't do it...

So, I've just done a test and I've had my lad and wife to do a pepsi challenge and all THREE of us state that the picture looks better and sharper with 1080p enabled (on sky box as opposed to my amp)... They noticed more around the EPG more than the picture as such in films... possibly because of low bandwidth in films? However, this is surprising as I'd always assume my stuff is better at processing than a Sky box... this may not be the case.

So in conslusion, I'm keeping it set to 1080p, because the picture is clearer/sharper... would like to take a picture but tbh, it doesn't really show the difference. So what does this show? The progressive scan processing is better in my Sky Box than on a £1k Amplifier? Who knows, I'm just reporting what we've seen here.

SO HAS ANYONE ELSE ACTUALLY DONE THIS... or assume that the processing done in your equipment is automatically better than Sky's?

When I had my Silver box installed I really wasn't impressed with the picture at 1080i and neither was the engineer. He changed it to 1080p and it looked better. Better motion and more clarity.

Will sky customers in future be able to buy a Sky Q Router ? or Sky going to replace the normal Sky Router as its been around for years and not updated

Agred, have you got an AMP that you can do a check on? i.e. Output SkyQ at 1080i and then feed into AMP then output 1080P through that? Be interested to see your findings? When I do that I find the SkyQ output to be better.... not sure why though as youd' expect an AMP to have a better processor than SKY tbh... however I don't think I have!

Wouldn't an AV Amp just process Audio though and just pass through the Video ?
