Hi all,

Just seen a notification on my Sky account that as of 31st Jan Sky maybe removing all the Discovery Channels,

Anyone heard about this?

For me its a reason to cancel.

I will miss Discovery HD, Animal Planet and Discovery Turbo too much as they're the main channels I watch.

Mischief do you have any info on this? Has it been due to a falling out with Discovery?

Yeah been reading about it today.

It's not just the Discovery channels but Eurosport too which is annoying a hell of a lot of people.

Pay dispute between them but looking like there isn't going to be a solution and the channels will indeed go. Lots of people asking if they can cancel contracts due to this which it appears they can so could be a get-out clause for some people, even if they didn't actually watch those channels much or at all.

Sounds to me like it's more Discovery than Sky here. Talktalk have already dropped them and other providers abroad are looking at their prices. Frankly I'm staggered Discovery are threatening this as they're so advertising-driven. The moment they're off Sky in the UK, they're going to lose a fortune in advertising revenue on top of the Sky money.

Not sure who to put the blame on tbh, i'd love to point the finger at Sky.

Massive shame, Discovery are but a shadow of their former selves, lots of the latest programming is just trying to appeal to the reality TV set.

Gutted tbh.

The following Discovery channels will vanish from Sky from February 1:

Discovery HD
Discovery History
Discovery Home & Healt
Discovery Science
Discovery Shed
Discovery Turbo
DMAX
Eurosport1
Eurosport2
Investigation Discovery
Quest
TLC
Animal Planet

It'll be a shame if it happens. However, that said, Discovery are pretty much just a reality TV network these days. I can't remember the last time they showed a program I wanted to watch. Far cry from 5-10 years ago. Seems like most of the documentary channels are going the same way too, sad.

Brilliant. The day the German masters starts and the only channel that covers it will be removed.

Eurosport is the only place to watch the majority of snooker and it's the main reason I wanted sky. I will be cancelling my subscription despite having 10 months left if this happens.

Wouldn't be that brothered if it wasn't for Eurosport, that certainly is a deal breaker. Just the impetus I need to up sticks and move to Virgin if this goes through.

Hmm not sure what to do on this. I enjoy a number of the channels if only for the re-runs that I have missed over the years and although I don't use them all that often we were as sky viewers still paying for them regardless.

And yet they are putting prices up all the time. I Know we wont get a reduction though for the removal of said channels which only leaves cancellation. :/

Edit: Should point out it does appear to be Discovery who want silly sums of money to be paid because of their Olympics coverage. Most of Europe seems to be dropping them.

And it does then go to state that Sky will purchase alternative channels from a different provider that they feel people want with the money as they have stated they feel they have paid more than they should have for the last few years anyways.

Edit 2: Discovery are suggesting that Sky pay less then they were 10 years ago for more channels.

So both look to be blaming each other. Although if Discovery were really concerned that what we as customers want is options and not just movies and football then they would offer their product at a lower price to allow us to have that. Clearly they want more money regardless of actually them creating less choice by removing their channels.

Are Discovery channels not available on any other playform?
Andi.

Yeah I know BT has them. The problem is that with the deals that Sky does...it's hard to find something as good value. I currently pay 30pm for all channels, sport and cinema. There is no BT package that good :(

Crikey. And these are the people that have the rights to the Olympic Games for Europe in 2020 or sometime thereafter?

FFS...Eurosport is pretty much my fav channel.
Only watch Wheeler Dealers on Discovery but did see a new series of Born Survivor advertised earlier in the week and would have watched that but I guess this is just 1 of many more reasons to cancel my Sky sub next month.

Yes, although the Olympics must be broadcast on FTA and the BBC have already signed a deal with Discovery networks for the next eight years I think it is.

This could be the impetus for me to actually go to Le Mans this year. That's about the only thing I watch regularly on Eurosport since they lost the MotoGP.

Exactly and even then the BT box is not as good as even 5 year old Sky boxes. I am paying a little more at £32.50pm although that also includes Sky Go Extra.

Great most if the programmes I watch are on those channels

I'm on a rolling monthly so can cancel at any time but I assume that anyone jn contract could cancel due to these changes - potenrially loosing 12 channels is not a small change in service
