Sky removing Discovery Packages

Short term versus long term I think. They'd likely save money in the short term as relatively few would leave and they'd save a wedge not paying for the channels. In the longer term however, it'd be another factor which would put people off taking Sky in the first place or renewing when their contract comes up, especially as VM and BT would push the fact that they have the channels more to lure more people across.

Then why not let them go? Clearly this was in both their interests otherwise Sky wouldn't have entered into negotiations in the first place. Sky wants to dominate, they wouldn't want to lose a bundle of very popular channels which would be available on competing services.

Obviously Sky entered into discussions and negotiations at the start as they would want to keep the channels they already had.

However I'm also certain Sky would have let Discovery go and take their channels with them had they continued to demand huge money.

So am pretty sure if the truth were known, it was Discovery coming back to Sky at the eleventh hour and saying "Ok, ok, we will take your offer"

Sky could afford to play hard ball, as Discovery had far more to loose than Sky ever did.

As 21st Century Fox has just put 18.5 billion dollars, into Sky's bank account I do not think saving money is high on their list of priorities.

Also had Discovery pulled their channels from Sky, how long do you think it would be until they were negotiating with VM & BT to get them to pay the extra money Discovery were not getting from Sky ?
Discovery could not last long without that money, so it would have to be made up from somewhere.
