Sky removing Discovery Packages

I think Discovery are basically having serious money problems. Trying to charge carriers too much, ridiculous number of adverts and they've even been offering a year's subscription to Eurosport Player for £20 for ages now.

All smacks of desperation. They may claim Sky are paying less than they used to but the quality's gone downhill a lot since then. It used to be a small number of channels with decent factual programming, now is a load of channels filled with mostly dross.

Great most if the programmes I watch are on those channels

I'm on a rolling monthly so can cancel at any time but I assume that anyone jn contract could cancel due to these changes - potenrially loosing 12 channels is not a small change in service

Yes this has been covered in various discussions. The Sky contract clearly states you can leave if the number of channels is reduced. Of course Sky could replace them with an equal number of new channels with any manner of rubbish on them but we're not talking about some obscure channels here - the loss of all Discovery channels and Eurosport is a massive change for many people and they'd have an impossible time if they tried to stop people cancelling their contracts.

Personally I have no interest in cancelling as it's still the best option for me but I am annoyed by it. When my contract is up in November and my bill goes up to £92+ a month then I'll likely be jumping ship back to Virgin, especially if I get Eurosport and BT Sport thrown in.

It's hard to know who this is going to hurt more. Discovery are going to take a massive hit with only VM and BT carrying them in the UK and the loss of advertising revenue but then Sky will be without Eurosport and BT Sport, both of which VM and BT will be chucking in to their standard packages whilst Sky will be asking you for another £30+ if you want their Sports offering.

Don't suppose anyone knows if Virgin have already signed up to whatever new deal Discovery are asking for, or will they like Sky also keep it top secret until they also reach the end of there current deal with Discovery and announce the loss of the channels with a like 3 days to spare as per Sky?

Finally the push i needed to dump my sky subscription

I'm on a reduced rate but even so value for money is very poor 40 odd a month vs my amazon prime video and netflix subs

There are rumours about a tie-in with BT.

I can see that happening with Eurosport at least - BT buying the rights to bundle it as part of their package, as they did with ESPN, then charging Sky subscribers through the nose for it.

But if it is out of Sky's ability to give any notice because it is Discovery causing it then what can Sky possibly do?

But why should we have to pay for 21 days for programs we can no longer watch.
if there had been more warning viewers could have started their notice period sooner.

You can cancel, you always have to have a month after cancellation rather than it being instant. That has always been the case though. You find out it has changed you cancel. You have your service for the following month and that's paid at the end?

Not sure why your expecting anything different. All contracts are the same on that front upon the right to cancel should the service provided change.

You can't start your notice period sooner if they did not know though that Discovery were going to go public about the failed negotiation and at the same time say they will stop the service at the end of the month. They gave Sky no time to do anything prior to the public cancellation of the deal and could therefore only react after.

Thus from now you have the ability to cancel with 21 days required to be paid. That is standard term of the contract regardless of the third party.

The only way it would have been any different is if Discovery had done this the same way but stated till the end of February and thus Discovery is holding the cards on the cancellation and not providing you the service you are paying for. Not Sky.

Im on a rolling contract with sky, and no virgin media in my area. Discovery etc are my main channels ffs :( what are my options to view discovery etc now?

The only channel I watch apart from Sky F1 is Discovery for Gold Rush, Fast and Loud, Wheeler Dealers etc.. Meh! :/

Getting the misses to check her emails (at my pace of doing things) is harder than pulling hen's teeth. Any idea if Nat Geo is on the cull list?
