SkyHD due to be installed in 2 days. What do i need to know?

This may be obvious but....

Move everything out of the way and pull out yer TV unit etc so its easy for him to get to so he can start work promptly (he may be running late and anything to save him time he will definately appreciate)

Also welcome him inside and offer him coffee/tea.

My sky engineer was absolutely ace, he wasn't a contracted out engineer, who even he had to have a moan about.

He answered all my questions and went above and beyond to get me sorted out properly:
* Installed quad LNB on my old dish as he wasnt happy with my signal (now get 2 full signal meters)
* Neatly tacked the cable from the box along the skirting to the phone and tidied up my adapters on the phone line.
* Explained to the missus* how it all works etc.
* Got a Samsung box which imho is perfect (haven't had any issues with it, sometimes I wonder what people on forums moan about them for)

*ok me too I admit :)

edit: He also didn't defile my porcelain, thats reserved for me.

Can the HDD's be replaced for bigger ones?
And can the recordings be transfered to another PC or recorded to another PC?

I will have my HTPC next to my SkyHD box so wondering if i can use that in anyway...?

You can only transfer the FTA stuff AFAIK and you have to take out the HDD to do it so not worth it really. You can swap for bigger HDDs but I think that some boxes are touchy about which ones you use so check up on it first.

I just record everything I want to save, while I watch it, on the HTPC through video in on the HVR4000.

You cannot watch recordings off your sky HDD on your pc. Need to use the HD box.

If you get a PACE box then get yourself a 1TB WD EVCS, the daddy of PVR drives, and totally compatible. All you need to do is hook it up to your PC first and use copy+ to get it ready so the skyHD box can see it.

The thomson (refurbs) also like these drives, but the samsung boxes are very finnicky about what large drives can be used. Amstrad I'm not sure about.

Its been installed :D

Guy came an hour early which was good. Had a talk and told him where I want the cables to come in and where the box would be situated. He was very accommodating and for filled all requests. He even cut my redundant aerial cable from the roof :)

While he went about putting up the dish and stuff I went about rearranging my AV set-up. I moved my amp from under the PS3 to under the TV so had to take out all the cables, re-route cables, cut the speaker cables down to length etc

He installed everything which took him around an hour. Offered him a tea at the start of the install which he didn't want so gave him some fresh orange juice as I could tell he was thirsty and sweating (weather was good yesterday).

Once it was all set-up, he showed me how to use it etc. All round nice guy :)

I got one of the new PACE boxes in original packaging. Label reads "made in 2009".

Added it to my harmony 1000 and all is good.

No more silver AV equipment and moving stuff about has defo improved the look of it :) and not a single cable in sight (which took me a few hours to do lol)

However, i've noticed on HD channels the audio is slightly out of sync. The audio is slightly ahead of the picture. My amp has a "AV Sync" control but im thinking if I change it so that audio lines up in the HD channels wount it then be out in SD channels?????

Running HDMI and Optical to amp.

Try a forced update on the box, fixed some sync problems for me.

- Unplug power cord from box.
- Remove viewing card.
- Hold BACKUP button ontop of box whilst plugging in power cord again.
- Keep holding for 30secs, all 4 lights should come on the front of the box, then let go of BACKUP.
- A messgae will displayed n screen showing update is taking place.
