Skylake Clockspeeds and benchmarks!

So 40% going by cinebench?

I think the physics score on FSE is like 1000 higher too, although not sure which one is the physics as it's in moonrunes.

I would not expect them to clock well but hopefully the arch will provide all the uplift necessary and you'll still get 4.5 or so, allowing for a clear upgrade choice for most.

Could I go "wrong" with purchasing an i7-5820k (and subsequently motherboard, and DDR4 RAM)? I'm going to see if I can pick one up for relatively cheap on Prime Day, but if I'll be massively disadvantaged in not waiting for Skylake, I won't.

I game, and plan to start making videos, as well the myth of 'futureproofinmg', any advice would be appreciated.

Go for it, 5820K is a great CPU. Very well priced for a 6 core Intel chip.

If true - confirming the increased IPC over haswell. More performance at lower clock speeds etc.

Though we still need to know how well these overclock, thats the million dollar question at the moment :D

Yup, this does look like a nice increase. Really looking forward to Skylake -E. Performance is about to get crazy in CPU and GPU over next few years.

I don't think you can go wrong buying the 5820K, what with DX12 supposed to utilise cores better. Its only another 4 weeks or so till supposed release can you wait and then see some real bench results and Win10 will be available also.

DX12 won't be a factor until 2017

Is this a Joke Intel?? Skylake i7 6700k 5% difference over i7 4790k Devil’s Canyon? No thanks I'll wait for cannon lake.

Nothing to see here move along:(

That's about right given previous releases since Sandy Bridge. The good news is that will give AMD a chance to get right back into the game with Zen :D.

Have a wrongly assumed it was part of the Win10 release? Could you please explain why 2017?

Good games get developed over 3-4 years period, so it will take some time before support is mainstream. Adoption should be much quicker, but darned consoles will be holding PCs back even more now.

I don't know, I think we may see much quicker adoption due to engine architects already having a year to work with Mantle and get their engines ready for lower level APIs on PC.

Also, Windows 10 is a free upgrade. This means many more people will be able to use the new DirectX version than in the past, when you had to pay for the privilege.

A lot of top developers want to standardize on Win10/DX12 right away, time will tell if they get their way, but it doesn't make sense for every game to use it.

I'm sure we'll see wide adoption of DX12 in 2016, MS have put a lot of effort into moving everyone to Win10 and also DX12 is widely supported on current graphics cards. In addition, even the Xbone will get DX12 so that's even more of a reason for developers to utilise it.

Hmmm.

I'm currently running my i5-2500k at stock speeds with a really cheap and nasty motherboard due to the one in my sig dying.

I don't know whether to just buy a new motherboard for my current CPU, upgrade to a 5820k or wait for Skylake.

Any ideas?

Skylake is only a few weeks away, may as well wait for the official reviews so you can make an informed decision.

I'm in same boat as you, I was gonna be using Skylake in my next project to replace my 2500k rig, but I have a x79 with a 4930k sitting doing nothing. Thinking of retiring my 2500k for that ain't such a bad idea instead of more expense going to Skylake. To be fair though changing my motherboard was more about looks than performance (did I just say that) !

I think this is what I'm going to do... Prime Day is next week so I'm hoping an i7-4790k/5820k goes on sale, but here's to hoping right!

If not, I'll wait until Skylake to make my decision.

May as well pick up some DDR4 RAM during Prime day if you're set on a full upgrade (to Haswell-E/Skylake), although there's not much benefit over DDR3 at the moment, nor do we know how many motherboards are going to accept both DDR3 and 4.

The question is do you need 2 more cores if yes a 5820k it is.

I've waited a long time for Skylake as I'm currently using a Q9550. Looking at the I7 6700K. In real terms, what sort of gain should I be looking at? Since I'll also be changing to DDR4 (8-16GB) (from 4GB DDR3).
