I've been farting around the web looking at various cars and these really caught my eye. Seemingly for £10k you have a wide choice of these, usually '98 cars with a few mods. I've yet to see a totally standard one.

For someone who knows nothing about them, what are they like? Whats good about them and whats bad about them? What sort of running costs would you be looking at for a standard or slightly modded one (nothing too mad). I'm currently searching for more info on them but maybe someone here can point me in the right direction.

I've seen a few on pistonheads and I've taken quite a shine to them. For insurance purposes, would all of them be imports or was a UK spec model released?

Something like that ^^ would tickle my fancy.

Prepare for incoming 'The GT-T sucks totally as it isnt a GT-R' comments.

Personally I think it looks like a reasonable way of getting a great looking, pretty quick car, if you can put up with the gash plastic interior and dodgy build quality.

I was afraid of such comments appearing, just like the whole "Boxster isn't a real Porsche" argument. I personnaly couldn't give a damn, I know I couldn't afford a GT-R so I'd be happy to settle for second best.

Having seen the interior in a couple of jap cars (Celica, S14, R33 GTR etc..) I agree with you about them being gash. It really is back to basics where that's concerned but I suppose I could live with that as long as it didn't break. I'd need to sit in one and have a fiddle with everything to see if it's acceptable.

Most examples I've seen seem to be pushing on average ~300bhp which is more than enough for me, maybe too big of a step up? I'm only speculating until I can find out more about them though.

Nice, quick cars but for less money you can get an R33 which in my opinion is a better looking car (although it is older, admittedly).

An R33 GTS-T can be had for silly cheap for what it is and they can be modded to uber powers with the change :D

If I may, a twist and perhaps not such a melodramatic conclusion.

I believe that if you buy a Skyline it should be a GTR, you'll probably only wish you had the GTR if you bought one. However i'm not taking away from the fact that its probably a great car, merely that i'd be a bit deflated that i had rump instead of fillet if you will. Not to mention the fact that most people will see it as a diluted GTR so i'd be prepared for the "Not a GTR though is it?" comments. If you care about other people's opinions that is.

Of course, i'll be the first to admit that I have no firsthand experience and you're much better off listening to someone like Durzel who has had R34 ownership.

I love the looks of the R33 but they're getting on a bit now. I need a car that won't blow up every few months so the newer the better. I'm not into going crazy with mods or anything so I don't really need to set aside a budget for that.

I suppose another option would be to spend half the budget on an R33 and just save the rest towards my Boxster/Z4 when I can afford the bloody thing.

Thats fine but a nice GT-R is what, £30,000?

True but I wasn't commenting on the feasibility of purchasing one, moreover the consequences of not, if you will :)

It's such a daft view though, everyone thinks it but its so silly.

You cant buy a Skyline GT-T, its not a GT-R
You cant buy a 530i, its not an M5.
You cant buy a 330d, its not an M3
You cant buy a Leon Cupra, its not a Cupra R
You cant buy a Civic VTi, its not a VTi-S
You cant buy.... etc etc.

I can see exactly where you're coming from. However, I'm not the sort that see's my car as an extention to my penis so such comments as, "It's not a GTR though, is it?" wouldn't bother me. I drive a Seat Toledo ffs :p

What actually makes the GTR better?
All the tuned ones I see knocking about seem to be GTRs.
What sort of power can be had from a GTT?

Always genuinely wondered this, but it'd get laughed at in its own thread :(

From what limited knowledge I have so far it would appear that the GTR has a fancy 4WD system with a load of computers to control it. I think it's lighter and more tuned towards track driving compared to the GT-T. It's basically a more hardcore version.

R34 GT-R IIRC is about 50k+ new, 4 wheel drive, proper mad electronics traction control etc. HUGE engine, a lot faster, bigger brakes, wheels, etc.

Oh really, please ignore me I don't know much about them.

For 9k for a second hand all be it very early 1998 model yet with low mileage, pretty much looks exactly the same as a gtr and has the same engine? that is damn impressive, and fast... bargain.

I never even knew a GT-T cheaper model existed before this thread.

Thats good :) , i think you understand that i'm not trying to be argumentative - I think that as long you are happy, that this is the main thing. I'm just pointing out the points which I think you should consider. I'm currently looking for specs on the GTT myself as you have me intrigued now!

Ok, I don't quite think I needed such an extravagant list. I agree with you, i'm merely stating that the Skyline has a reputation as being an extravagant, iconic car and this is largely due to the GTR variant. And thus the inferior (for want of a better word) models will live in that shadow and thats how people percieve it. If he doesn't care then it doesn't matter.

By the way, the difference between the VTI and VTI-S is purely cosmetic, so i'm not guilty there as I was planning on buying Skywalker's 'normal' VTI initially and it was only because he pulled out that I found the VTI-S. I could have easily saved the extra for the VTI-S, but I was going to buy his VTI regardless.

So you couldn't tune them to similar power? With similar money?
Or is the GTR engine a lot better?
Both straight sixes?
Is the GTT RWD then?

*I am intrigued* :D
