Skyline R34 GT-T

Oh really, please ignore me I don't know much about them.

For 9k for a second hand all be it very early 1998 model yet with low mileage, pretty much looks exactly the same as a gtr and has the same engine? that is damn impressive, and fast... bargain.

I never even knew a GT-T cheaper model existed before this thread.

The GTT is a 2.5 single turbo I believe whereas the GTR is a 2.6 twin turbo, slight difference in displacement, but the tuning potential of the RB26 is far higher.

Both have AWD i think and 280bhp out of the box but the GTR has a lot of expensive kit - the suspension, gearbox (OS Giken) and AWD is all very advanced/expensive. Four wheel steering etc etc. Its just a very technologically advanced version with little expense spared.

Aye so it seems!

In the R34 series you had the GT-R at the top of the tree. This featured the 2.6L RB62DETT engine with a reworked head since the R33 GT-R, pushing out ~300bhp. This also featured 4WD and AWS

The GT-T has the RB25DET, 100cc less and a turbo "missing", RWD and less in the way of gadetry.

In R33 form, the GT-R has an RB26DETT but not in as high a state of tune and the model down is the GTS-T which is much the same as the GT-T is to the R34 GT-R.

The box AFAIK is a Getrag unit not an OS Giken

I've been farting around the web looking at various cars and these really caught my eye. Seemingly for £10k you have a wide choice of these, usually '98 cars with a few mods. I've yet to see a totally standard one.

For someone who knows nothing about them, what are they like? Whats good about them and whats bad about them? What sort of running costs would you be looking at for a standard or slightly modded one (nothing too mad). I'm currently searching for more info on them but maybe someone here can point me in the right direction.

I've seen a few on pistonheads and I've taken quite a shine to them. For insurance purposes, would all of them be imports or was a UK spec model released?

Something like that ^^ would tickle my fancy.

I personally know the owners of that car, and it is a lovely, very well looked after example.

If I were to spend that sort of money on a Skyline (not that I would), it would be a stupidly powerfull seriously sorted R32 GTR though. But that's just me.

The whole 'OMG SKYLINE!!!1111one' thing makes me laugh everytime. There are far better cars for the money.

personally i can understand the want for one of these. looks fantastic imo.

not driven one tho, so not aware of the nanny state it creates for you as a driver or just how good they really are.

I love Skylines. Would seriously love to own one at some point. The running cost huge? I'm guessing I wouldn't be able to get insured on one for like 10 years anyway :p

A friend of mine got a R33 GTS-T VSPEC II with the decent body styling. It had done 40,000kms and cost 6k. It was an import and an auction 4.5 grade.

Essentially this was not to far removed from the R34 GTT. Performance is really nice, though the rear wheel drive caught him out earlier this year on the road to salisbury and he had a head on with a R5 GT. The car was a cube by the end of a the cars and a few trees but he and the other driver walked out un hurt.

Great cars, high running costs, high insurance, seriously expensive to get parts, (a crakced windscreen on his R33 was £££s).

If you want a R34 then nothing else for the money touches it imo.

In what way? Looks are subjective, but certainly in performance terms there is plenty that 'touches' it. Infact, there is plenty that betters it.

Is it time to dig out that MLR post again? ;)

Well, quite frankly when it comes to other people's opinions I don't really give a flying one these days. It's still nice to observations and feedback but at the end of the day the decisions I make are for myself.

We get the old "don't bother as it isn't a GT-R" type arguments all the time in Motors - actually it happens on most forums.

"Don't bother with a Clarke 105 MIG if you wanna patch a sill, you want a £10,000 pro unit purchased from Detroit."

"Forget trying to spray a car with anything less than a 3 billion pound compressor"

"6 and 10 point bolt on cages are a waste of time, the only true solution is a multipoint works-spec weld in rollcage"

"Wilwood big disc conversion? I don't think so, you want to be investing a MINIMUM of 2 grand on AP watercooled 10 pots for your 205 track car"

"Converting a Nova to a 1.6 16v on Webers is a waste of time you may as well triple your budget and fit a 2.0 16v Turbo it's the only way!"

People just don't seem to be able to draw the line. Manufacturers produce a range of products for a very good reason - to suit different applications, different pockets, different tastes. If you don't want or need the GT-R then you buy the GT-S. That's the whole point. Of course, if you can get the GT-R for similar money and can afford to run it then it would be a sensible idea to plump for the GT-R, but as you can't it isn't!

If you like it, get it, that's what I say. Bear in mind though that even the GT-S can be pricey to run (I believe consumables, exhausts, panels, glass and so on are all relatively expensive)

If you WANT a R34 then nothing else for the money touches it imo. Mainly becuse anything else wouldn't be a skyline. It was a self fulfilling statement tbh. There are other cars that are better, but everyones different.

I would never buy one unless it was a GTR but GTTs are capeable and look subjectively the muts nuts.

But that applies to everything ever made. It's just a strange statement to make. If I really want 1.2 Corsa Merit, nothing else can touch it, because that's what I want.

No, it looks like an akward characature of itself. An the R33 looks like an overweight S14.

But hey, that's just my opinion ;)
