Skyrim: I keep gettin pwned by dragons - how do you guys kill them :(

Tell you what was hard that krosis boss.

He does love his Fireball staff...

Ok ok, haha, you know what I mean, and come to think about it, yea bears can move like **** of a shovel. Last night I was legging it from a sabre cat, turned around and the sod was right behind me, in panic I hit a button and managed to unwield and punch the sabre cat in the eye, I decided to keep doing this as I was still in panic. Needless to say I died.

But you get my point right? As in if you think about how to approach fights and what you need and what works and what doesnt then it makes it a lot easier than just relying on simple bashing away.

Except they only really apply to mages.
There are no poisons that deal elemental damage like there used to be so your only options are Paralysis or Lingering/Damage Health poisons. (Slow poisons don't seem to have any effect at all...).
Restoration doesn't have an Absorb Health spell anymore and they are exceptionally rare on items for dis-enchantment (the only one I've found is Blade of Woe and that requires you to near enough complete the Brotherhood quest line... or kill Astrid instead of joining).
Enchantments you can create earlier on are incredibly weak and difficult to maintain (not to mention carrying multiple variations on weapons isn't exactly light). Silver Weapons do extra damage to undead but suck so much you'd be crippling yourself to use them.
They did away with damage types on weapons long ago so you can't swap to a warhammer to take on a skeleton and a sword to take on a Draugr.

Melee really does get the short end of the stick really as far as countering enemies is concerned.

Wow I didnt expect such a response..a lot of great ideas here thanx guys :D OcUK delivers again!

City guards and NPC's can often help in the fight too - it doesn't matter who gets the kill shot you will absorbe the Dragon soul when dead.

Thats a good one, Im gonna start using them as human shields! Let them wear out the dragon and then Im movin in!

Use your surroundings to your advantage, find a rock or even a tree to hide behind when the Dragon is breathing fire/ice at you

Yea I try that and sometimes it works well - but Im a bit gutted now that I know they can roast you even if you are below the water surface! Thats dragon cheating! I need a hi-power halon extinguisher.

Level two handed and heavy armour then suit up and go at it with a battleaxe. Works every time.

How much is movement slowed down by heavy armour? I mean...getting around can take some time are you really slowed down by wearing the big armours? But I guess I will need it if Im to defeat the dragon!

Press number 4 and pull out C4. Run up behind it, plant 3 C4s and then run. Then press trigger... oh **** wait... Skyrim? Pfft

Hahaa nice 1 :p I admit I DO hope someone will come up with a mod that allows assault rifles in Skyrim muahaa...or even the Van Helsing GATLING CROSSBOW.

But comin back to Skyrim - after reading your replies I realize that apart from the shouts I dont have any magic. I have to be honest - Im just not keen on it as I play Skyrim as a warrior dude, boshing things. I dont find the idea of running about with glowing balls appealing but if it takes magic to help kill a dragon Im gonna do it!! Im Level 7 :( still need to get up there hahaa.

You don't need magic to kill dragons. I've never bothered to try killing one with magic. I always use arrows (I've enchanted my bow with fire), and two handed swords and warhammers to kill them. You need to use arrows when the dragon mostly stays in the air, and arrows when it lands but from a distance and where you can hide between shooting arrows, like crouching behind a rock or a shed or even a tree sometimes. If I see the dragon has landed, is not facing me and is attacking lydia with fire or frost breath, I'll often take that opportunity to run up to it and start attacking it with a two handed weapon. Sometimes head on but mostly to its side, back legs, wings.
You'll need to keep finding cover or keep running out of its way while you use the fast healing spell to restore your health.

I've built my character as a warrior, developed one and two handed weapon skills and increased both my stamina and health each time I level up. Magicka occasionally. There are definitely times when magic in one hand is very useful. For other enemies, I mostly I'll have a sword in one hand, and in the other I'll have either the basic flames or frost spells, or a staff of some form of magic.

I've enchanted my bow with fire

Now see...that kinda stuff I wont mind and I didnt think of that! So when you fire an arrow it burns the dragon? I have read about those ...man what are they called now..those workstations where you enchant weapons lol. Those tables. Thats how you make fire-bows right.

Yeah sounds interesting, I have yet to enchant anything in skyrim, man I must be a bad player lol.

Nah I dont think youre "bad", you can play anyway you choose -

1. Full-magic
2. Full-on warrior
3. A mix of both

The cool thing is the experience we each have will be different! Kinda cool to think that when each of us gets attacked by a giant we will do different things. One of us will pull out a big-ass sword, another will cast a spell to freeze it while a third will enchant an arrow and also chuck a fireball at it.

Yep, burns the dragon, and you can hear the dragon hissing each time it gets burned, particularly the frost dragons. Also, it's useful to see if an arrow has hit a dragon or any enemy from a distance as you'll see flames flying off or sometimes the dragons glow slightly :) You want the arcane enchanter table, they're dotted about all over the place. You can find one in the jarls house in dragonsreach. I had found a sword early in the game called the ancient honed sword of scorching. Once you learn enchanting, you simply destroy the weapon at the arcane table, and then you'll have the fire enchant permanently. Then you just have to add the enchant to another weapon, such as a bow, and it'll use up a soul gem in the process. You just need to find or buy a weapon first that is already enchanted with scorching.
This might help with understanding enchanting items.

you simply destroy the weapon at the arcane table

 You have to destroy it? I guess thats how the games works though..? Can you tell I havent done the Skyrim homework haha! Arcane Enchanter table thats the one. Ive seen them but never really took the time to check em out. Soul gems...well I can see I got some work to do so all quests are on hold as I tramp around blinging my armoury :D

And thats where Skyrim excels..cuz its just FUN to just wander around boshing the odd bandit and chillin by the river.

Ebony warhammer to the face at the moment

i got that today, awsome weapon, i have it enchanted with some fire thingy, and i also have some orkish gloves that give me 20% bonus on 2 handed weapons,
i can 1 hit kill most of the lesser enemies now :D

Whaaaaa? It is inface very few amount of enemies that don't, most do! Take Trolls, you roast them with some sort of fire damage and you are laughing, that is their weak spot. Mages, melee attack is their weak spot and lightning damage drains their mana, bears are slow so ranged combat, skeletons also slow, dougars (what ever they are called) are weak to fire. The list goes on.
I wasn't talking about weakness to x, which is what you have just described. The way the OP is worded (it's a boss, where's the weak spot) suggested to me location based damage, which afaik is not in the game.

Of course he could not have meant that, in which case I answered a question that nobody asked :p.

you have to learn the enchantments before you can apply it to your weapon.

find a rubbish burning weapon (a few are dropped with cave bosses for example) take it to the arcane enchanter table and click disenchant. the weapon gets destroyed but you learn the enchantment.

find a soul gem with a soul in it. go the the table with your bow and clicking your bow, the soul gem and the enchantment and then pressing R enchants your weapon. if you level up enchanting the stronger the burning sensation the dragon will feel.

dont worry im a warrior build as well and i didnt do any magic (including enchanting) until level 25 or so. lots of archery killed my dragons.

another tip, draw the dragon towards a town post and then let others kill it. I have killed like 4 dragons like that now. One of the imperial missions involved taking over a fort and Mr. dragon was nice enough to show up, he blew away all of the bandits and just had enough health left for me to finish it off. It was a heel-click moment for me ;p.

I have to be honest - I *did* mean location-based damage :)

@ Nutella33 - thanks for all those tips Im gonna jump into Skyrim now and have a play with all of that!

@ Arclite - you know -thats happened once to me but just by fluke :D I think it was the first dragon encounter where it attacks that watchtower? I kinda held back and watched the others take it down and then walked over and absorbed the dragonness.

Psh, you're wasting valuable skill exp by not slaughtering those bandits and the dragon yourself! :p

Though in all seriousness, its a very handy technique earlier on to get hold of the dragon bones/scales and whatever else it has, plus some random loot from dead NPCs which you can sell off for some nice extra cash towards the start of the game when you'll probably need it. Later on it'll be better to do all the killing yourself.

I take it you haven't come across Rahgot (or at least I think it was him). Just for kicks there's also three Draugr Deathlords or whatever the shouty ones are when you battle him

Oh good, because I always liked running around trying to find my weapon ><

I'm thinking melee gets the short end of the stick again...
