So, Skyrim...is it any good?

Im really torn whether to part with my cash for this.

Truthfully Im not a huge RPG fan, I think the last RPG I played a lot and enjoyed was Final Fantasy 7. Since then, I have played games that have 'RPG elements' but are not real RPG's. It think the reason I find RPG's hard to get into is I dont give them the time they deserve and get bored quickly. I struggle to enjoy a game when all you start with is a poxy butter knife and have to spend hours working up the ladder to get the good stuff.

I found this with Fallout 3, the weapons you start with are so useless and have no ammo I kept dying and quickly got frustrated playing it. I then found the cheats to unlock the various weapons and items so I found the game far more enjoyable to play.

Is there anyone here that has played Skyrim and decided they didnt like it? What were the reasons?

Cheers.

It's similar to fallout 3, in that you walk about and kill things. RPG elements are standard affair.....

Dont like it in the sense that you can get lost(goal wise) in this huge world, and there is so much to do..... but this may be the attraction for some....

I never had a problem with starter gear/spells in any RPG, fair enough you can't take on a Deathclaw at lvl2 with a 9mm pistol in Fallout

However i didn't feel under powered when i started playing Skyrim, did a few hours in, but i put that down to me specing into 1 handed melee, then deciding to go destruction magic

Game of the decade tbh, but if you're not into western RPGs then just don't get it.

I know how you're feeling, everyone is going on and on about Skyrim at the moment (for a good reason, it's bloody amazing) and you feel like you're missing out. You shouldn't force yourself to play something you probably won't enjoy based on your own personal gaming preferences.

I feel the same every time one of these big FPS games come out, and every man and his dog are playing it and talking about it and it makes me feel like I should play it too. But then I remember I no longer find repetitive online shooters fun, and I'd get bored very quickly.

indeed they seem to have used a similar time dilation device that is found in minecraft. i mean look im posting this at 7am and i could sware i only just ate dinner and hopped onto skyrim for a quick couple of quests...

I've played Morrowind, Oblivion and Skyrim and I think it's the best out of the lot. The problem with the previous games for me was that it was easy to pick up so many stupid quests and it was such a chore to manage them. Skyrim (well from my about 15 hours of play so far), seems to make managing them a lot easy and I'm finding overall that I can just get on and do a quest without picking up another 5 of those stupid quests like "kill 10 wolves", "pick "20 flowers" or whatever. I also hated picking up quests and finding they were too hard for my character and thus cluttering up quest journal until I could do them. Keeping track of quests, remembering where to go for them and filtering out the rubbish ones was especially annoying in Morrowind I remember.

That might seem a bit of a weird and specific thing for some but it's the type of thing that eventually gets to me in a games like these as you increasingly spend time on sorting through quests which you can actually do and are fun rather than just getting on with the game. Eventually I get fed up and just stop playing the game.

Maybe that might happen in Skyrim as I'm not that far in the game yet, but all of the quests I've done so far seem to be varied enough and all doable and fun. There doesn't seem to be too many quests so far such that the overall quality of them are lower.

But yeah rant aside, give it a try even if you've been the fence with previous and similar games. Along with Starcraft 2, one of the best games of the year for me.

im by far not a rpg fan other than the mass effect series and i've never played any of the elder scrolls series but my god im loving it. game of the year for me!
50 hours in i've barely touched the main story line and i'm fairly pimped out with the best armor and weapons for a juggernaut.

giants and mammoths now last 5 secs and when mr dragon lands he gets messed up quickly!

I am Dovahkiin!

I keep wavering both ways on the issue :P

Sometimes I realise my quest log isn't showing a target anymore and I'm lost in the wilderness with only "Find <obscure name>" to go by... Sometimes I really, really wish the game would give me a hint as to the level of the thing I'm thinking of attacking BEFORE I attack it and die horribly... Sometimes I wonder exactly how much damage my summoned sword/familiar does... And sometimes I curse the very air the developers breathe for not actually having an on-screen indicator to say "You are turning into a vampire! Find help!" :(

Other times I sit down for 30 minutes and suddenly I'm really hungry and thirsty and 4 hours have gone by! :D

Graphically it's beautiful, the freedom of choice is magnificent, player steering is minimal, and in-game help and information is non existant. The only sane way I can find to play is with a bunch of forums and alchemy guides on my 2nd screen. If you have a mindset that says this is ok, then you'll probably enjoy the game. If you want the game to help you out when you don't know things (e.g. by suggesting recipes, marking things reliably on your map, or warning you that that troll has 5x your hitpoints) then it's not really the game for you :)

Well an RPG should never hold your hand, a good RPG lets you work stuff out for yourself. Talking to the right people and reading books in-game also helps. They are there for a reason

It's an excellent game and one that will provide months of entertainment. In that regard it's an absolute bargain! There are a few things that do annoy me though:

Hotkeys - this is just awful implementation. Specifically, assigning hotkeys to dual weapons. The number of times I've needed to swap from my two daggers to my healing spell / flaming axe combo to give me a boost of health only to end up with a dagger and flaming axe, no health and a fatal blow heading my way is waaaaay to often!

UI in general - takes some getting used to and is completely inefficient and counter-intuitive. The sooner someone mods this the better :)

No fast travel to an undiscovered location. I can understand why they do this and to be honest, I'd rather walk and discover new locations along the way. But at the start of the game you have to walk ages from one end of the map to the other with some of the quests. Obviously this changes as you start to add discovered locations to your map, but be aware that there's a lot of walking at the start. Invest in a horse quickly :D

Lo-res textures. Ugghhhhhh. It starts of so well, lush views of the local countryside, mountains rising in the background, deer galloping in the distance. Then you ge into your first fight, pick up a shield and block. And think wtf is that ugly thing taking up half of my screen? Seriously, Skyrim is a beauty to behold at a distance, but up close it is incredibly low res. Horrible! Where's the hi-res PC textures we were promised?

But these are minor problems, ones that will be fixed (officially or unofficially), and I can see myself losing a lot of time to this game :)

I did not enjoy the previous elder scrolls game but this one has hooked me for sure. Iv found that you can start to get a fair few side quests building up but they dont become obtrusive. and that is mostly because i have been focused on the main story rather than the side stories. Just tonight i spent all night doing the side quest lines (not single side quests but whole seperate quest lines) and they have been fantastic and just as good as the main story, i certainly wish id done so earlier. There is a massive amount of freedom and so at the start you may feel a little overwhelmed. But the main story will get your through those first steps and introduce you to the world at which point you will start exploring and choosing your own path :D

As for the walking. If you take the time to check the things out en route to your quest marker it will A) unlock more fast travel locations but B) probably provide some kind of quest/story/cave etc to explore and plunder. Or perhaps a dragon lurking on a cliff or protecting a new shout.

True! It's all about the random little encounters you end up experiencing during a long walk from one location to another, really makes the game!

And yes, it is amazing. :D

Seems like a very good game but I just don't care about any of the quests or about what anyone has to say. I feel like I have to force myself to play. There must be something wrong with me.

it's ok but so far in no way would I rank this game of the decade (well maybe 2011-2020 but that's only because we've only had one year of that decade )
It's really just a progression from Oblivion with a much worse UI but better Level scaling (though still defective)
As for Textures I actualy find they are worse than OB's - something than will get fixed by mods
