Good morning.

I have a WD 500 gig (WD5000AAKS) as my OS drive, then I have a Samsung 250gig (HD250HJ) and WD 1tb(WD10EARS) as my storgae drives.
When accessing the storage drives I ferequently get a delay of approximately 4-15 seconds before the window opens and shows the folders/files.
Just before the drive shows the folders/filse I hear a quiet noise which appears to be either the drive spinning up or the motherboard "powering up".

Is this just poor drive performance, or could it be something more like the mobo controller?

Is it not that the drives a sleeping and only spin up when being used, I think windows is set to do it automatically and you need to change it in the power settings for them to stay spinning.

yep you can disable HDD sleep using power management settings. i've done this myself and it works but be aware that there is a possibility that it could wreck your drives. a slim possibility but there nonetheless.
