I believe it's best to sleep in multiples of 4 hours, is this correct? Would you feel better if you adhered to that? I have a really, really hard time actually waking up and mustering the will to get out of bed, even when it's 8:45 and I need to be at work for 9...

It's not just me is it?

Doubtful, a recent study concluded that 8 was the most you should have and that, I think, 7 was the best. Can't find it though so can't link to it.

I get about 7 hours a night, less at the weekends, and I don't really have any trouble getting up in the morning. Mind, I've cut my caffeine intake down considerably (one cup of tea in the morning) and sorted my diet / meal times out and now I get better sleep out of the 7 hours that I ever did out of 8 or 9.

Quality of sleep counts as much as quantity.

I read it was 1 and half hour cycles! Anyway, I tend to get about 7 hours of sleep a night. Difficult to do at first, but when you're used to getting up early it is pretty easy.

i've been getting up at 7.40 every day this week for a new job (used to work 10-6 and get up at 9:20 every day :D) and i've found it HARD. i yawn constantly! advice needed! :S

Isn't getting a set number of hours tricky though? Because even though you go to bed, you don't drop off right away...

I'm up at 7am every weekday, so how much I get is determined by when I go to bed, and in turn when I actually fall asleep (took me an hour to fall asleep last night :()

Surely this highly depends on the person. Didn't Thatcher sleep 2 hours a night? Or is that another urban legend?

My sleeping varies hugely, but I wake up mostly via sunlight - I don't use curtains, just a thin bedsheet over the windows to keep pervs away. Sunlight comes through very well in the mornings so I don't wake up with blinding light.

Downside is I find it very hard to get up in the winter's.

A friend of my brother trained himself to have 15 minute power naps ever hour.

So awake for 45, sleep for 15.

Took him a month to get the pattern down, and he proceeded to go 2 months with no ill effects.

He said the only thing that annoyed him was not being able to watch a full-length movie or drive for extended periods of time.

i think its all down to your 'bodyclock' on a weekend i noramlly find that i wake around 11 - 12 sometimes 10... and it dosn't matter what time i go to bed.... whether its 11 or 12 at night or 4 in the morning ill always get up at the same time
during the week a have to be up n out by 7:30 to get to work for 8 (AND IT KILLS ME)

my theory, if you have to wake up by alarm you havnt had enough sleep; SIMPLE

it depends on the individual, watched some sleep program a bit ago where they measured it, and it is different for everyone.

6.5 to 7hrs for me .... normally 7 at the weekend and 6.5 during the week, (and if I am knackered so go to bed half and hour earlier then I just wake up half and hour earlier!

Every time I read into sleeping patterns it seems to change, gone from 4 hours to 3 hours, then went to 60mins. I dont get how they are coming up with different answers unless they arent accounting for different types of people...

The average human sleeps in cycles of 90 mins.

I find that if I get 3 hours sleep I can wake up and function normally for a good 12 - 15 hours before I need to sleep again. However, if I get 4 or 5 horus sleep I wake up tired and unable to function properly.

I would also like to try polyphasic sleeping.

It's annoying. Went to bed around 1am last night and was woken up at 5am by the TV. I could have just got up and walked around because I was wide awake. Instead I turned over, fell back to sleep and woke up at 9am really tired and found it difficult to get up.

I wish I could get the 5am feeling at 9am :(
