I've been looking at upgrading my current 470 and wondered would it be a viable option to go SLI or look at a single card solution, such as the 580 (haven't quite got the funds for a 680). I would look at ATI, but I need nvidia so I can give 3D Vision 2 a go with my XL2420T.

Go SLI.
Upgrading to 1 580 you wont see much difference.
SLI 470s gives you approx the same power as a 680 but with less vram. Don't be put off by people saying about driver issues. I have had SLI for about 2 years now & the only game that didn't like it was Alan Wake but that was fixed in a patch. Aside from that I have had 0 issues. 470s can be had damn cheap at the moment too :)

Yea, my reason for the thread. Just seeing a few 470's pop up as well as cheap 580's. Well atleast it wasnt another 680 thread :p

I'm tempted to pick up a third one.
The only thing stopping me is I have a USB3 card in my 3rd PCI-e graphics card slot because with SLI 470s I cant get to my standard PCI-e 1x or 2x slots.

Im going to be pushing it too when it comes to SLI. I've got an extra PCI-E slot, PCI slot and got a sound card in the 3rd space.

For slot spacing, i have to mount my pcie xonar DX in the x4 slot above the top gpu. I say go for the sli option, ive thought about upgrading, but tbh it's not really worth it. At 1920x1200, vram usage isnt an issue, im seeing 1200mb usage in bf3 on ultra settings.

I can just (barely) see the 2nd PCI-E slot thanks to the Accelero cooler on my original 470 lol.

Thanks again for the input from both of you, makes it better that you both currently have SLI too.

Would you be able to mount the custom cooled card in the lower pcie slot? It would be better to have a reference cooled card in the topmost slot, as it will be exhausting out the pci bracket. Non ref cards can be a nightmare in sli, had to get rid of a pair of gtx 460's due to them running too hot.

I will give it a go, but I doubt it due to PCI sound card in the bottom slot. I think the Accelero version if something like 3 slots

My sound card is above my top graphics card:

I can't use my bottom slot for a 3rd graphics card because my USB 3 card doesnt fit above my sound card, the Gigabyte heat pipes are in the way.

What MB have you got and is your sound card PCI or PCIe?

MSI P67A-GD65 and sound card is in bottom PCI slot. Current cooler is 3 slot, so it just touches the space where 2nd PCI-E slot is. I'd just be able to get a 2nd card in, but it would be a tight squeeze.

How about 2x570.. they would eat every single card for lunch now... even 680!

Yes, you are still only looking at approx 10% maximum improvement on the 470s though. Although 570s have the benefit of being cooler which when talking about SLI can be quite important. It was SLI 470s that pushed me into watercooling

Looking at that board you'd be fine to have the one with a 3 slot cooler on the top as long as the bottom one is standard. I can't see it being a problem.
